I am an experimental social psychologist, but very much a generalist. To the extent that there is a common theme tying my research together, it is that I study human social behavior from an evolutionary perspective. I am especially interested in understanding the psychology of everyday life. Why do we enjoy gossip about celebrities? Why do some people name their children after themselves while others do not? My research has been featured in several documentary films, thousands of popular print and internet outlets, and hundreds of television and radio interviews including NPR, the BBC, FOX News, ITV (London), and NBC's Today Show. I also write for non-academic audiences, and I have published in dozens of popular media outlets including CNN, Time, Newsweek, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, The New Republic, The Chicago tribune, The Guardian, Business Insider, Salon, The Daily Beast, PBS NewsHour, and Scientific American. The flexibility of my interests is reflected in my teaching, in my research, and in my consulting activities. As a consultant I have done everything from designing interactive exhibits for zoos to reviewing medical studies for law firms; I have even worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Community Affairs on the causes and consequences of population growth in the Florida Keys.Specialties: Social Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology, Environmental Psychology, Organizational Behavior

Cornelia H. Dudley Professor Of PsychologyKnox College Sep 1979 - PresentGalesburg, Il, UsAside from the usual teaching of classes and advising of students, I spend a great deal of time supervising student research and participating in committee work and other administrative tasks involved with the day to day running of the college. For example, I was a department chair for a decade, I did a stint as the interim associate dean of the college, and I founded and was the first chair of the environmental studies program. I spent 13 years as the faculty tutorial director for the McNair Scholars program at Knox and I have chaired more faculty committees than I can recall. My position at Knox has afforded me many opportunities for international travel. I have been a visiting professor in Amsterdam, South Africa, and in Ireland, and I have participated in assorted professional development activities in Turkey, Tanzania, Northern Ireland, Hungary, The Czech Republic, and Denmark. I have also presented papers or given invited talks at professional conferences in the Netherlands, England, France, and Germany. I served as the Knox adviser for the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) for five years, which gave me an excuse to travel to Copenhagen every once in a while. -
Head Wrestling CoachKnox College Oct 1985 - Mar 2000Galesburg, Il, UsI was the head wrestling coach at Knox College from 1985-1989 and from 1992-2000, and an assistant wrestling coach from 2000-2015. As head coach, I was responsible for everything related to the wrestling program from recruiting to running practice every day. My role as an assistant was primarily as the tournament director and event manager for all home events, but I also ran an occasional practice and did some coaching during competitions as well. -

BloggerPsychology Today Feb 2015 - PresentUsI write a blog for Psychology Today Magazine entitled "Out of the Ooze: Navigating the 21st Century with a Stone-Age Mind." It is fun, because I get to pontificate on whatever happens to be on my mind and I even get paid for it if people tune in. Most, but not all, of my posts have an evolutionary psychology connection. -
Lecturer, University Fellow, & Graduate Teaching AssistantUniversity Of Maine Sep 1974 - May 1979Orono, Me, UsI taught courses in Statistics and Social Psychology at the University of Maine and also provided audio-visual assistance to professors and proctored exams for them. Bank TellerUnited Penn Bank Jun 1971 - Aug 1976This was a part-time and summer job throughout college and during one graduate school summer. I worked in ten different offices of a large, now-defunct Eastern Pennsylvania Bank (eventually gobbled up by Mellon Bank). I traveled to different offices to cover for employees on vacation or to help out when the office was understaffed for other reasons. Mostly, I just did what I was told.

Jack Of All TradesAssorted Part-Time Kid Jobs Apr 1967 - Jun 1974Like most people, I had a series of part-time jobs in high school and college that seemed awful at the time but in hindsight were good learning experiences. At various times I sold concessions on commission at a circus, delivered newspapers, and cleaned animal cages. I had one job where my main responsibility was to prevent the local juvenile delinquents from stealing everything that wasn't nailed down from a Youth Recreation Center. I also did time as a cashier and announcer at a Bingo Hall. My most professionally relevant early job occurred in college where I worked for the King's College psychology department as the manager of the lab rat colony, a research assistant in a classical conditioning laboratory, and a teaching assistant for the department's introductory psychology classes.
