About Frank Mcclain

I grew up involved with amateur (HAM) radio, and learned Morse Code (CW), radio and electronics theory at an early age. Before I was even licensed, I attended a small convention and won a Commodore Vic20, which I attached to a small black-and-white TV as my monitor. Added a tape drive and a 64K expansion card, and I was off and running with BASIC. If I wasn't struggling to program various color displays (hard to see on my TV), I was communicating with other HAM operators across the country and around the world via CW; I enjoyed that form more than voice. I didn't really get into programming, and ultimately decided computers weren't for me, but apparently they weren't done with me yet...In the military, I employed my electronics theory knowledge to go into a component-level repair specialty. I was trained in advanced troubleshooting of various kinds of circuits and military equipment, to the point of identifying individual faulting components. I actually found bugs (such as one leg of a transistor that was out of tolerance and causing unexpected faults) of whhiw the instructors were not aware. Maybe it was because of having to find so many bugs in my computer code! I really didn't want to deal with electronic circuits for a living; however, the logical process and investigative skills just wouldn't leave me alone...Fast-forward many years, one military combat theater (first Gulf War), and a pair of bosses that felt I was "too good with computers" not to look for a career there - which I didn't want, because IT just wasn't interesting to me. Hardening systems against malware and hackers was okay, and even hunting down and removing the bits and pieces of infections from the registry, Recycle Bin, Restore Points, etc, but even that was a bit inane. But, since I respected my bosses, I looked further, and found digital forensics. Once I did, I was home! And as they say, the rest is history...
