About Frank Petroski
My work as a leader in technology, web solutions, and futurist studies intertwines with my passion for community service. The rise and fall of the “dot-com bubble” brought me to Virginia in 2001, when my Philadelphia-based start-up was acquired by a Midlothian-based firm. In this era, the Information Technology sector was defined by the necessity of initiative, agility, determination, and collaboration, but even as my career has transformed over the years, these same core values define everything I do. My biggest change over the past couple of decades has been my growing passion for getting involved in my local government, community, and the various organizations that provide ways for me to serve to the best of my ability.

Founder, Web Strategist, & Futurist
Frank is a Zend PHP Certified Engineer who received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Philadelphia University in 1999. Joining the Internet industry in the late ‘90s, Frank experienced the monumental rise of the dot-com era and the historic burst of the dot-com bubble first-hand. Dedication, agility, determination, and initiative defined the successes of that era, and these traits were the foundation for Frank’s launching of Petrofy, a web development company focused on delivering a cutting-edge Internet presence to its clients. Frank believes in the collaborative and participatory culture of the worldwide development community and has embraced Open Source Initiative—particularly the PHP platform. He not only enjoys developing and implementing innovative applications utilizing the latest Internet-based technologies, he also enjoys tackling new challenges with a vast array of tools in his belt.First at Petrofy and now at Midlothian Web Solutions, he has remained dedicated to responsiveness, integrity, and becoming a true partner in every client’s success. When he isn’t in front of his computer, he can often be found playing volleyball, bowling, cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles/Flyers/Phillies, or spending time with his family.
Web Strategist & Technology Specialist
From Senior Editor of his high school yearbook to a Zend PHP Certified Engineer, Frank Petroski knows not only strong writing but also the technology that allows the world to discover it. He received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Philadelphia University and has previously worked as a Principle Web Designer at General Dynamics, a Senior Programmer/Analyst at PrecisionIR Group and a Streaming Architect at Vcall, Inc, among other positions. As CTO of K. S. Writing, Frank specializes in technology resources as well as strategic planning and business development.
Principal Designer, Web
My projects encompassed building web-based ballistic missile defense communications systems for the United States Department of Defense. Technologies used were primarily PHP, MySQL and Drupal.
Senior Programmer / Analyst
I have worked on a range of applications using many different languages. I have developed webcast platforms in Coldfusion as well as classic ASP. Our products stream audio/video in Windows Media, Real Media and Flash. The webcasts have numerous capabilities including presenter controlled slides, participant information capturing, Q&A and surveys. The webcasts also include an on-demand replay where the a/v and slides are synchronized. I also helped develop one of our webcasting portals (InvestorCalendar.com). This is a public facing portal for investors to come and take advantage of our product offerings. I am responsible for our Vcall Admin, the tool used to manage our clients details, book webcasts, monitor webcasts and many other tasks. The tool is an internal website that uses classic ASP along with JavaScript and XML. I am involved with nearly every system from SQL reporting for sales to making sure the billing systems stay up-to-date with all of our latest product offerings.
Streaming Architect
Wanting to put my Bachelors in Computer Science to good use, I felt the need to refocus my efforts into programming rather than management. Our CTO and COO understood my desire and agreed to create a specialized new role for me called a Streaming Architect. In this role, I developed applications to enhance our Broadcast Operations Center. I worked on establishing most of our streaming media capabilities in-house. Along with developing applications to automate processes, I setup and configured streaming media encoders and servers.
Website Operations Manager
As the dotcom grew, we divided into four individual teams of people for handling application development, network administration, technical support and streaming media operations. I was mostly involved in the application development side of the business and worked heavily on developing programs and procedures to improve production for each department. Because I was experienced in all four departments and played an active role in all of them, I shifted positions into the Website Operations Manager role. I reported to the Chief Operating Officer while all but the network administration department reported directly to me. I managed as many as twelve employees while serving in this role.
Internet Programmer / Web Developer
Weeks before graduating with my B.S. in Computer Science, I was offered a job with a newly formed dot-com. I was the twelfth person to join the company and reported directly to the CTO. Being one of only two people in the IT department, I was responsible for many aspects including website design and maintenance, procedure creation, network administration, technical support and application development. Our company was specialized in delivering multimedia live and on-demand webcasts for the investor relations sector.
Assistant System Administrator
During my summer and Christmas breaks from school, I worked as the assistant to the System Administrator in the two person MIS department of Alpha Shirt Company. We managed two systems; a Windows NT network and a UNIX-based dummy terminal network. This job consisted of managing the existing infrastructure and helping to grow the company. Much of the job was running CAT-5 cables, performing installations and providing inter-office technical support. While still in school, this job gave me "real world" computer and networking experience and helped me to build a solid foundation for my future in information technology.
