ABOR's Board of Directors sensed that problems existed and tasked me with researching these concerns and reporting back on the facts. In my initial evaluation I was able to confirm the Boards concerns and clearly describe the problems. After carful consideration they asked me to stay and address these issues. The challenges were very extensive; ranging from replacing core infrastructure equipment, negotiating and implementing new communications services, sourcing and deploying several IT solutions, defining new IT policies and procedures to working closely with board committees and vendors in the design and planning of ABORs new Head Quarters. There were dozens of projects. • Negotiated and delivered new communications solutions for current office and new headquarters location. Quadrupling the organization's network capacity via two separate carriers for less than what was being paid for the current services via a single T1 based provider.• Established a source code control policy and set in place the systems necessary to adhere to this policy.• Designed and deployed a major Document Management solution.• Upgraded the core network, servers and related infrastructure.• Replaced and expanded WIFI network serving a staff of 50 and hundreds to members simultaneously.• Sourced and deployed a replacement telephone system for the entire organization.• Developed GIS Maps of members and water districts.• ABOR relied heavily on third-party solutions for its members but had no means to monitor those systems and respond to problems proactively or track SLA compliance. Defined and built a mini Network Operations Center for the monitoring and management of all the existing and new systems/solutions that solved these problems. • Competencies: Strategic Direction, Security Requirements, System Migration, Information System vendor selection & mtg, Information Technology team formation and IT Management.

  • Citynap
    President
    Citynap Jun 2005 - Dec 2008
Started with a secured floor designed and built out to become a Telco Central office. The telco however did not fully turn-up the site and it was sold. I worked things out with the existing tenant so they could leave and I could lease the space. I built a small team and went to work building the site out to become a major colocation site. The was very challenging. The basics of the buildings location were good but the building was in severe disrepair and it took a lot of vision to see what was possible. I define all aspects of the business and hired and trained the eng. operations team to execute accordingly. Accomplishments:- Successfully built CityNAP both literally and as a company with broad name recognition and customer demand.- Educating the San Antonio market about the benefits of Network Access Points (NAPs) and growing a demand and revenue base for this solution. - Established an aggressive co-marketing agreement with the local power company, CPS Energy, where CityNAP used 100% renewable energy and CPS promoted CityNAP in their advertising campaign. This was very successful for both parties and a true win/win. Supported with CityNAP’s very public advocacy of the Windtricity program many more companies committed to buying renewable energy from CPS.- Texas's First 100% Green Data Center second in the US and recognized as an EPA green power partner.
  • Yipes Communications, Inc.

Yipes Communications, Inc. Feb 1995 - Feb 2001
Began as NanoSpace in Palo Alto, CA in 1995 (renamed YIPES Communications, Inc. in Feb 2000). Initially a regional Internet Service Provider, in 1998 I came up with the idea of delivering Metro communications services via Ethernet over Fiber. This was the origination of the idea of metropolitan Ethernet carriers and services. Though this was extremely controversial at the time it now represents a $60B market and Yipes was sold for $300M in 2004. While I was CEO for the first 5 years, post raising major funding I ran all operations and finance until we got a CFO shortly before I left the company in 2001. • Following my deployment plans and financial models hired a staff of approximately 200 employees and contractors and began a very urgent and aggressive deployment and customer turnup effort. Setting and sharing an exhaustive set of KPIs at executive staff and board meetings while overcoming an enormous number of challenges.• Acted as Treasurer / CFO and managed $291M invested funds and expenses. I setup an investment portfolio and built an investment strategy that made budgeted monies available to the company quarterly with return rates beyond the norm (8.5%-10.5). When I left the company, I was managing over $165M.• Developed and deployed new Layer2 Ethernet-based large scale network topology consisting of over 36,000 miles of Metro Fiber Ethernet networks across the top 20 metro areas with over 600 Points of Presences and 165 Data Centers.• Evaluated, selected and deployed several systems and solutions to include: Oracle Financials, Siebel, Kana, HP Openview, and Portal Software. Extreme Networks Switches, Juniper Routers, Cisco Routers and Switches, Netscreen Firewalls, and EMC mass storage solutions.• Competencies: Network architecture and deployment, research and development, strategic planning, financial management, system migration, project management, vendor mtg, national team formation and management.
  • Nanospace / Yipes
    Ceo
    Nanospace / Yipes Feb 1995 - Feb 2001
Began as NanoSpace in Palo Alto, CA in 1995; Renamed to YIPES Communications, Inc. and relocated to San Francisco, CA in 2000. This was the continuation and extension of the work Peter Kaminski and I started while at Netcom. For the first few years it was funded by us exclusively and backed by our consulting work. We built the company as a regional Internet Service Provider with fourteen Bay Area access points of presence (dial-in locations). Towards the end of 1997 it felt clear that we needed a new plan, to change things somehow. It was about this time was when I learned that the city of Palo Alto had just installed excess fiber optics in the area. In an instant I came up with the idea of delivering Metro communications services via fiber leveraging our existing Ethernet equipment. This was the origination of the idea of metropolitan Gigabit Ethernet carriers and services. I then ended a consulting contract with a key client to allow me to focus on this idea and dramatically expand the opportunities for our company. In an interview with the San Jose Mercury I said we could do this get this idea working within a year. And within that year Peter and I got Kana Communications and Palo Alto Networks up as customers on our Ethernet over Fiber Optics Network. Before this time and for years afterward delivering services like this was considered an impossibility. Now it is a standard around the world. I created the strategic plan led the effort to deploy this solution across the US. Though this was extremely controversial at the time it now represents a $12B market.

  • Netcom Online Communications Inc.
Director Of Qa And Serverside Engineering
Netcom Online Communications Inc. Oct 1994 - Jan 1995
Challenge: It was a wild time and the Internet was new and many still doubted its relevance. We had just finished NetCruiser, the first integrated browser for the Internet. At the time we had a very small and new team and roughly 10,000 Unix shell customers which we thought was a lot. With our first software release mid 1994 the demand for our services shot up dramatically and we had over 200,000 customers by November 1994 and went public December 1994. Scaling the company during this dynamic time to meet this extraordinary growth was a huge challenge.Accomplishments:- Netcom’s NetCruiser software drove the successful public offering. I helped to develop and produce much of the supporting Red Herring documentation for Netcom’s IPO.- With 18hr days 7 days a week we where able to solve the multitude of scaling problems and thrive as a company. It was no small feat and took a huge group effort, for a time it was a life style choice for many of the employees. In 1997 Netcom was sold in parts for over $600M.- Helped to design the idea and deploy the first ix.netcom.com machine running on Sun Solaris Servers, the first of hundreds and still in use today.- Helped to develop and produce much of the supporting documentation for the Red Herring as part of Netcom’s IPO.- Lead migration from Home Brewed accounting system to Oracle Financials in preparation for company IPO. - Came up with innovative scaling solution for file systems, this same solution is used by many companies today.- Created a problem-tracking database and contributed to the creation of the test case database.- Led the reorganization of the customer support department. Helped to develop and implement new procedures and policies for customer support and software engineering that reduced customer calls into the support center by 70+%.- Designed and led the development and deployment of an on-line fax service, the first. This is basically what became E-Fax and other similar services.

Wrote the test plans and test cases for each application.Developed test harnesses and automated test using Newton script.Work focused on API-level testing, but did include user-interface testing. It was a challenging and fairly unstructured environment but we needed to test and ship the various software components of the Newton and ship are products as soon as possible. Accomplishments:- I took it upon myself to build an automated test harness to allow for the nearly complete automated testing of the various applications as they were developed.- By the time I left I had completely documented all of my work and code. The testing that I was responsible for was automated and I left things so that it would be easy for anybody to step in. I did such an outstanding job they referenced me and my work for years after I was gone.

    Qa Manager
Coactive Computing Inc. Aug 1992 - Jul 1994
Coactive was an early startup company before the mega-funded companies meaning we did not have a lot of funding to work with. We were also creating something new, an easy to use and install small office / home office LAN product. Enabling customers to create their own LANs with little effort.Accomplishments: - Discerned and solved many software and hardware product problems.- Designed and build network QA lab.- Developed extensive set of automated testing suites, to include feature and functionality testing suites, validation suites, regression testing, and limits testing. These tools played critical roles in the development process and allowed us to deliver an outstanding software solution.- Helped to develop a network installation process and software that actually did allow small offices to build their own LANs in less than five minutes.- Shipped the first bug-free consumer software application I have ever known or heard of.- Deployed over 200,000 units into the market.
