California Open Lands preserves and manages open space, exchanges scientific information, and fosters the conservation of California’s natural resources. During my involvement with California Open Lands, the organization made the move towards becoming the leading Northern California land trust organization utilizing principles of indigenous traditional ecological knowledge (ITEK) in land stewardship.

HRDAG is a non-partisan nonprofit, aimed at applying rigorous science to the analysis of human rights violations around the world. The San Francisco-based organization works on establishing a scientifically defensible historical record of human rights abuses, including publishing public reports and providing expert testimony in war crimes trials. As a board member, I advised the HRDAG's Executive Director in matters of organizational developement, operations, and fundraising. During my time with the organization, HRDAG went through a process of successfully sharpening its public profile by overhauling its branding and communications.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the organization that operates Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects on the web. I joined Wikimedia as one of its first employees and played a leadership role during its phase of growing from an $8 million to a $75 million organization. During my time as an executive at Wikimedia, I led the organization's key global initiatives in programs and evaluation. * Member of the executive team, reporting directly to Wikimedia’s Executive Director Sue Gardner* Oversaw work on Wikipedia Zero, one of Wikimedia Foundation’s key mobile initiatives. The program delivers free access to Wikipedia on mobile devices for users in the Global South (established through partnerships with the world’s biggest mobile providers, including Orange, Telenor, Axiata, and Vimpelcom); between December 2012 and December 2013, page views through Wikipedia Zero increased from 3 million to 50 million* Started the Wikimedia movement’s first initiative on systematically evaluating the effectiveness and impact of programs globally

Wikimedia Deutschland is the German chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation. I played a defining role in the early years of the organization by hiring and managing its first CEO, and driving some of its key programs and partnerships.* Created “Wikipedia Academy”, an event series held in several countries, including Germany, France, Argentina, Sweden, Israel and the United States* Developed partnerships with a wide range of educational institutions, including the Mainz Academy of Science and Literature* Played a leadership role in establishing the first Wikimedia office in Germany; recruited and managed its first CEO* Represented Wikimedia Germany at conferences, on TV and in radio and newspaper interviews* Secured first ever government grant (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) for a Wikimedia event (as part of the “Year of Science”)
