Managed Yale Divinity School’s publications while completing a master’s degree at Yale University’s Graduate School for Arts and Sciences. Supervise designers, photographers and editors who make up an award-winning production team that flourishes in the face of budget cuts. Transitioned targeted publications from print to digital formats.

Headed the Moscow Bureau responsible for coverage of the former Soviet Union. Oversaw editorial assignments, payroll, schedules and foreign ministry contacts for a five-person office with an annual budget of more than $200,000. Hired and supervised four new non-staff stringers, in the midst of a painful staff reduction. Balanced management duties with writing an average of two analytical stories a week for the U.S., International and Internet editions serving the magazine’s 4 million subscribers. Traveled about 20 percent of the time to report stories and cultivate sometimes reluctant sources throughout the former Soviet Union. Deployed reporters and photographers to cover news outside Moscow, while personally traveling to report on breaking stories including the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan and the killing of former Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov in Chechnya. Garnered choice placement in the magazine, including the cover. Made appearances on U.S. and Russian media, including the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and Radio Svoboda.

Moscow Correspondent for both the English-language magazine and the Washington-based secular wire service. Realized a long-held dream by carving out a journalistic niche centered on the connection in Russia and Eastern Europe between religious identity and post-Communist politics. Garnered cover stories in the Report and placement of RNS stories in major print outlets, including the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Traced the links between rising anti-Semitism in the region and government-supported nationalism. Chronicled the Russian Orthodox Church’s revival and often-clumsy forays into politics. Documented the spread of Islamic fundamentalism in Central Asia by reporting for nearly a month after 9/11 in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Based on this, I wrote a series of RNS stories for which I won the 2002 Religion Writer of the Year from the secular Religion Newswriters Association. Captured the role of religion in Balkan conflicts by reporting from Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro during and after the NATO bombing campaign. This reporting contributed to the 2001 Eileen Egan Journalism Award.

Conceived of the Russian-language monthly, secured over $50,000 in financing to cover operating expenses and won over skeptical Moscow homeless activists. Selected and managed the eight-person editorial, distribution and advertising staff, offering guidance on a daily basis. Mediated disputes between a mixed staff of Russians and Westerners.

Staff writer and features editor at Moscow’s only English-language newspaper with a daily readership topping 75,000. Supervised 10 freelance writers with little journalistic experience to fill a daily three-page features section. Hatched story ideas and recruited new writing talent.
