Garnered cover stories in the Report and placement of RNS stories in major print outlets, including the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Traced the links between rising anti-Semitism in the region and government-supported nationalism. Chronicled the Russian Orthodox Church’s revival and often-clumsy forays into politics. Documented the spread of Islamic fundamentalism in Central Asia by reporting for nearly a month after 9/11 in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Based on this, I wrote a series of RNS stories for which I won the 2002 Religion Writer of the Year from the secular Religion Newswriters Association. Captured the role of religion in Balkan conflicts by reporting from Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro during and after the NATO bombing campaign. This reporting contributed to the 2001 Eileen Egan Journalism Award. -
