About Frank Vollmer
I am pursuing a multi-disciplinary research initiative in Molecular, Nano- and Quantum Sensors and Systems that is unique in the UK (and the world) and that brings together the research streams of nanophotonics, nanoplasmonics, quantum optics, molecular mechanics (molecular machines, synthetic bio) and in the future, also molecular electronics and neuroscience. This new pan-disciplinary area, I believe, will be a very large and upcoming research playground at the cross-roads of cutting edge experimental and theoretical sciences; there will be applications in health, nanotechnology, metrology, environment, security, and astronomy; it touches on core subjects in physics, quantum optics, optics, biophysics, engineering, molecular mechanics and biochemistry.https://www.vollmerlab.com/http://scholar.google.de/citations?user=N59pNxIAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=aoResearcherID: J-4732-2013

Professor Of Biophysics
Professor Of Biophysics
The new Living Systems Institute LSI focuses on interdisciplinary research that transcends the boundaries of mathematics, engineering and the biological, medical and physical sciences. The LSI brings together bio-medical research scientists with the sophisticated modelling and high-end diagnostic technology developed by mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists and engineers. This will enable the study of disease at a fundamental level to inform treatment and more durable and effective disease therapies. The Institute will build on Exeter's significant established research strengths in human, animal and plant diseases, and incorporate innovative diagnostic imaging and biosensing technologies, and powerful mathematical modelling capabilities. The inter-disciplinary vision for the LSI requires the physical colocation of scientists with very broad skills, and the provision of high-specification technologies. The University of Exeter is investing £52.5m in the innovative LSI building.Read more at https://www.exeter.ac.uk/livingsystems/
Max Planck Research Group Leader
The Group heads are chosen following an international call for applications and appointed by the President of the Max Planck Society. They are free to structure their scientific research for themselves and can pursue their work – embedded in the stimulating and inspiring research environment of an MPI - independently and with their own budget. These posts are highly sought-after, since they offer young researchers selected in rigorous competition the opportunity, supported by a secure budget, to lay the foundation for a successful scientific career.
Associate Bioengineer
Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH, "The Brigham") is the largest hospital of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. It is Harvard Medical School's second largest teaching affiliate with 793 beds. With Massachusetts General Hospital, it is one of the two founding members of Partners HealthCare, the largest healthcare provider in Massachusetts.
Instructor
The school has a large and distinguished faculty to support its missions of education, research, and clinical care. These faculty hold appointments in the basic science departments on the HMS Quadrangle, and in the clinical departments located in multiple Harvard-affiliated hospitals and institutions in Boston.
Scholar-In-Residence (Wyss Institute)
Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired EngineeringThe Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering uses Nature's design principles to develop bioinspired materials and devices that will transform medicine and create a more sustainable world.Working as an alliance among Harvard's Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Arts & Sciences and in partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Boston University, the Institute crosses disciplinary and institutional barriers to engage in high-risk, fundamental research that leads to transformative technological breakthroughs.
Rowland Junior Fellow
Since the merger with Harvard in 2002, the Rowland Institute continues Dr. Edwin Land's vision of the ideal laboratory: a broad view of science and an appreciation for the rich potential for discovery in the contact between the traditional disciplines; a dedication to small-scale laboratory science; an emphasis on technical support of the highest level for experimentation; and a desire to let the best minds be creative without concern for the vagaries of the funding world. Central to the Institute is the Junior Fellows program. Young scientists have the opportunity to perform independent experimental work for five years, with full institutional support and access to the Institute's outstanding technical and scientific resources. Every year the institute looks for candidates in all the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, ...) as well as in engineering, with special attention to interdisciplinary opportunities and the development of new experimental methods. The disappearance of the great exploratory industrial research laboratories has been a major loss for the scientific world. The aim of the Rowland institute is to be a place where some of that spirit is kept alive, and a number of initiatives worldwide have followed suit.
Graduate Fellow
The Rockefeller University is a world-renowned center for research and graduate education in the biomedical sciences, chemistry and biophysics. The university's Ph.D. program offers rigorous training in the biomedical and physical sciences and close mentoring by faculty. Rockefeller also offers one of the nation's top M.D./Ph.D. programs with neighboring Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Medical College of Cornell University. The graduate program is flexible and individualized depending on a student's needs, and provides full financial support, housing on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and outstanding opportunities for intellectual growth.
