    At SBLk we are constantly exploring options to further improve animal welfare, to improve assurance and to optimise the processes at both our particpants and SBLk. Field of exploration are amongst others- smart camera systems to improve animal welfare in abattoirs- automatic optical image recognition to (partly) automate handling of communication items- scan app to assess consumer products in retail- blockchain to improve processes and handling for all stakeholders in the egg chain (and possibly other chains)- dna or other fields of research to track the flow of an end product in the production chain to its sourceSome of these topics are planned in 2023, some will follow in 2024 and 2025. I am coordinating the planning, investigations and execution of the research and the subsequent implementation (if proven succesfull).

    At SBLk I am managing the project for the selection and implementation of new software to facilitate and support the primary process. Since the SBLk process is rather unique the main challenge is to get a clear description and diagram and a solid set of specifications.Now that the selection process has been completed we are working with our IT partner to plan and execute the development project. The first workshops were completed in October 2018 and development continued into March 2019. Upon completion of the MVP and migration of all data from the old system Phase 1 of the new BLkportal was released on April 29th, 2019.In May the development of enhancements and improvements (Phase 2) was started. This phase will introduce some new features to the portal and will run into September 2019. We will also introduce PowerBI as a dashboard for management and operational data.Phase 3 has started mid October 2019 and will end continue till the end of January 2020. Phase 3 introduced a few new functions and some enhancements to the portal.Phase 4 has started mid October 2020 and was finalised in April 2021. The biggest addition to the portal is the planning of invoicing data in the portal and the interfacing with AFAS. Furthermore again a number of enhancements and improvements, both for the users (participants in the Better Life label) as well as for the internal SBLk organisation. Phase 5 started in November 2021 and concluded in March 2022. In this phase improvements were made to the user-interface and help functions. Some parts of the approval proces have -where possible- been automated. Based on a conformity score some further automations have been made possible.We have set up a roadmap for the development of the portal in the future. Phase 6 was executed in early 2023.Phase 7 has started in november 2023 and will end early feb 2024. Again some enhancements and additions will be developed.

    At SBLk we have started a project to better manage the development and sharing of the BLl criteria farmers and processors have to adhere to when participating in the Better Life label. Instead of the current way of using spreadsheets for each scope or company type we have opted to develop a central database for managing all criteria. At the same time all criteria are being simplyfied and shared over scopes and companytypes where possible to make them more modular.The system will eventually allow the users to make their own selection of scopes or companytypes to create a program (overview) of all criteria for their specific situation, in Dutch or English.In this project SBLk partners with the software developers that also built our BLkportal and our websites builders. Not only will we build the criteria system (called SPOT) we will also build the webinterface and some API's for the certification bodies to retrieve the criteria directly from our database and return inspection and certification data. And for the exchange of the language files with our translators.The system will be ready by the end of June 2021, the roll out of the new modular version of the criteria will take until the end of 2022. They have been finalised during 2022 and a part of 2023. On september 1st., 2023 the new criteria have come into force for processing companies.

    De Landelijke Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming (LID) controleert het welzijn van 30.000 gezelschaps- en hobbydieren per jaar. De LID inspecteurs zijn bevoegd om zowel straf- als bestuursrechtelijke maatregelen te treffen. Een melding over mishandeling of verwaarlozing van dieren kan worden gemaakt bij 144. Bij de LID is in 2019 MeReL uitgerold, het systeem ter ondersteuning van het primaire proces van de LID. Na deze uitrol zijn er nog diverse zaken die doorontwikkeld en verder uitgerold moeten worden. In dit project stel ik samen met de collega's functionele specificaties vast, coördineer ik de realisatie van uitbreidingen en aanvullingen en de samenwerking met de leverancier van het systeem, en breng de ICT technische kennis in.Gedurende 2020 zijn er diverse functies toegevoegd zoals een geweldsmelding en documenten module. Van de lijst met ca 80 issues begin van het jaar is er nu nog 1 over.
