Division Iii Vice President And Missouri Region Representative | Alumni Advisory Board
Upon the release of Phi Theta Kappa's five-year plan, Catalyst 2022, a critical realization emerged: the imperative to revitalize the Society's relationship with its alumni. In response, each regional coordinator was tasked with nominating an alumnus to represent their region on the newly formed Alumni Advisory Board (AAB).I was honored to receive the nomination from Missouri's Regional Coordinators for the AAB position. A few months later, I was elected by my peers as the Division III Vice President. In this pivotal role, I had the privilege of representing the alumni interests of nine distinct regions, spanning Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas/Nebraska, Michigan, Minn-Kota (MN, ND, SD), Missouri, Oklahoma/Arkansas, and Wisconsin. Our responsibilities on the AAB extended far beyond representation. We were entrusted with the mission of increasing awareness of Phi Theta Kappa, fostering stronger connections between the Society and its alumni, and providing invaluable input to Headquarters staff on Society-wide issues. Serving as a communication liaison between Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters and alumni associations in our respective regions, we played a pivotal role in ensuring that the voices of alumni were heard and respected. Our quarterly virtual meetings with the CEO of Phi Theta Kappa, the Director of Alumni Engagement, and the Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation served as crucial forums for addressing alumni issues and shaping the Society's future trajectory. As the go-to "think tank" on all matters related to the Society's alumni, we collaboratively brainstormed innovative solutions and strategies to propel Phi Theta Kappa forward.Phi Theta Kappa is the largest international honor society for two-year colleges, embodying a mission to recognize academic achievement and cultivate scholarly and leadership growth among community college students.
Student Services Representative
During prospective student tours, the Director for Recruitment and Student Services often referred to us as "the Google of the school." As Student Service Representatives, our mission was to be the ultimate resource hub for all things college-related. Whether it was college admission, class registration, financial aid, personal counseling, or one-on-one advising, we were the go-to experts, serving anywhere from 10 to 100 students daily. As my expertise grew, I took on additional responsibilities. These included overseeing our student tracking system, developing a comprehensive multi-campus, multi-department information directory, and representing my peers at monthly "Front Desk Committee" meetings.Beyond my core duties, I embraced opportunities for personal growth and community impact:- Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Advisor-in-Training: I immersed myself in mentoring future leaders, preparing to guide the college's Phi Theta Kappa chapter.- Religious Inclusion Panelist: As a panelist for the college's diversity and inclusion initiative, MOSAIC, I contributed to fostering a culture of understanding and acceptance.- OTC SafeZone Ally: Recognizing the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion, I completed training as a SafeZone Ally, committed to fostering a supportive environment for all students and staff.- Connect-4-Success Coach: Selected to mentor a first-generation college student, I provided guidance and support through her inaugural semester, fostering a successful transition to college life.-Green Dot Program Participant: I underwent training in personal violence prevention strategies, equipping myself to contribute to campus safety initiatives. My experience at Ozarks Technical Community College was profoundly rewarding. I am grateful for the support and encouragement from colleagues and students. Their belief in my abilities has fueled my commitment to making a positive impact in my endeavors, drawing inspiration from the values instilled during my time at OTC.
Volunteer Coordinator
As the Volunteer Coordinator for Christian County Family Crisis Center, it was my job to be the public face of the shelter. My primary responsibilities were divided into two distinct categories:My first main responsibility was to educate and increase community awareness of the shelter itself and of the domestic abuse/sexual assault epidemic plaguing both our nation and state. I had the opportunity to do this by being a presenter to local organizations and groups such as churches, Rotary, and local clubs. I also was able to speak directly to college students--one of the most common abuse and assault demographics--by attending a local university's "non-profit awareness" fair.My second main responsibility was to recruit and coordinate volunteers and manage donations. When I arrived, the volunteer onboarding system was sorely disorganized, so I spent several weeks digitizing 5+ years of volunteer archives, creating a volunteer listing and volunteer activity board, and updating the shelter's volunteer manual. The largest project I spearheaded for the shelter was planning and coordinating the move of the shelter supply room from outside of the shelter to inside the shelter walls, to improve the safety of staff and clients. As anyone who has ever worked in the non-profit world will tell you, your job tends to become so much more than just what's on the official job description. Not only did I do my job's duties, but I also pulled garden weeds, cleaned rooms, fixed gutters and gates, gathered supplies, played with the shelter's children, and even was on 24-hour hotline crisis call duty, sometimes on holiday weekends. As so often happens for many non-profit workers, I left CCFCC due to burn-out, stress-related health issues, and "compassion fatigue". My time with the organization and the women and children they serve has left a lasting impression on my heart; I have a newfound respect for the non-profit world and those who selflessly serve within it.
Management Assistant
My time at GHN can best be described as a constant learning experience. When I was hired on by the CEO and CFO of the firm, it was made clear to me that I would be encouraged to make a large impact in a small company, grow within my natural strengths, and take my education of this flavor of corporate life seriously. During my year and a half with the company, I became known as a "jack-of-all-trades" and master of all! To name just a few of the things I accomplished:- Became the office supply cabinet and basement organization guru- Organized project archives, digitized paper records (to meet legal auditing regulation standards), and revamped the computer file system- Proofread project specifications- Was a member of the company's first CORE Team and Fun Team- Scheduled Lunch and Learn opportunities for the architects and engineers to earn their Continuing Education Units- Worked with the HR department to create revitalized job descriptions and KSA evaluations for every position in the company- Coordinated the venue and food for the company's 2015 Strategic Retreat- Was one of two employees who learned Adobe InDesign and with the Graphic Design department, developed a new marketing book format for RFQs- Proposed a comprehensive social media clause for the employee handbook- Created step by step "How-To" guides for complicated internal processesEven when I visit the office now a couple years after working there, I can still see the impact of my actions and it fills my heart with joy to know that I helped improve a company's culture in such a positive way!
Hollywood Brown Derby Hostess
"We create happiness by providing the finest in entertainment for people of all ages everywhere." I certainly took the entertainment industry giant's mission to heart during my 8-month stay.I was interviewed and chosen (for a second time!) to participate in the Walt Disney World College Program, an internship with the Fortune 500 company. I was placed as a hostess at the Hollywood Brown Derby, a Signature Dining restaurant located within the Hollywood Studios theme park. The most important job of the hosts and hostesses of the HBD were to be our guests first and last impression of the restaurant's unique atmosphere of glitz, glamour, and Golden Age of Hollywood nostalgia. One of my favorite things to do with guests while they waited for their table was to share the fascinating history of the original Brown Derby located in California. Often guests would ask questions about the famous caricatures that cover the restaurants walls and I would join guests in their search for their favorite famous personality's picture. I also spent several months working with the cast of the Hollywood & Vine and 50's Prime Time Café, two other restaurants located on Hollywood Studios property. My time at all three restaurants was invaluable as I learned how to work and laugh with people from all different faiths, creeds, and cultures. There is no doubt in my mind that my time at Walt Disney World greatly shaped me into the person I am today and is the number one reason why customer service/happiness is so important to me!Some special memories from my time at the Hollywood Brown Derby:- Spreading pixie dust on tables for guest birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions- Going outside my designated role and working as a bus girl for the night when the restaurant was short-staffed- Working with a young lady's parents and cast members to create a magical and unforgettable Sweet 16 birthday dinner experience- Helping an opera signer sign the famous Brown Derby book
