The Kafue Conservation Hub seeks to develop the Kafue National Park through a sustainable development strategy that incorporates social and economic development with environmental sustainability. The greater Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s last remaining great wildlife wildernesses. Its wildlife and forests are being rapidly depleted and are in danger of being lost, and the 200,000 people who live in the region suffer from severe food deficits. By integrating multiple forms of tourism, sustainable conservation and community development, the KAFUE HUB will generate considerable value by reversing these trends. The KAFUE HUB will demonstrate the synergies between wildlife and forest conservation, business education and poverty reduction. The KAFUE HUB’s goal to develop Kafue as the “next Kruger” providing the economic and intellectual engine to drive a pro-poor climate smart economic in western Zambia. A critical mass of tourism will provide a powerful economic driver in this under-developed region. These investments tap into full range of markets, from the very high end with 5 star investments, but our major innovations are to access the international family 3 star wildlife market and especially to target the untapped local Zambian market with an affordable destination within their own country. This tourism development will provide the economic engine and financial sustainability for the bigger goals of park conservation and community development. Conservation and community development will be supported through a multi-pronged approach that includes training, development of livelihoods through jobs at hotels as well as entrepreneurial activities to support the hotels. Through the Sustainability Institute we will apply high level expertise to the challenge of integrated community development in park buffer zones by combining support to community governance with wildlife development and conservation (climate smart) agriculture.

The Grabouw Sustainable Development Initiative (GSDI) is a programme started by Theewaterskloof Local Municipality and the Development Bank of South Africa as a way to address rural underdevelopment in the Elgin-Grabouw region. Grabouw is a town located in the Western Cape which experiences issues of gross inequality with destitute communities surrounded by rich and wealthy landowners and farmers. The region is thus plagued with socio-economic problems such as high levels of unemployment, seasonal unskilled employment and a recurring shortage of infrastructure and social services. In order to address these issues in a holistic sustainable manner the GSDI was formulated which aims to provide a partnership between local government structures and the private sector in order to address planning of the region in a more integrated manner. As such a tender was put out to the private sector and the Elgin Development Corporation (EdCorp), which won this tender, signed a contract with the local municipality to strategically develop the town by broadening the economic base and transforming the current rural, underdeveloped Grabouw Communities. The intention is to achieve this through the implementation of a range of projects to address the triple bottom line of environmental sustainability, economic development and social upliftment. EdCorp as the implementer of the project has identified a range of projects which, if implemented will have the latent ability to address the issues of the town and to provide real change and economic opportunities around how these issues are resolved.
