I studied Social and Cultural Anthropology and Medical Anthropology at University of Vienna and Brunel University. The research for my master's thesis was on Mexican curanderism and the transfer and transformation of therapeutic knowledge practices of semi-urban healers. Conducting multi-sited ethnography and applying an apprenticeship approach, I focused on the learning trajectories from beginners to experts. My analysis concentrated on processes of revitalization, transnational appropriation and professionalization. After completing my graduate degree in 2009 (with distinction) I was puzzled by the interest in animism within European subcultures, which led to the beginning of my doctoral dissertation.During my doctoral research, with the aim of developing an ethnographically sound understanding of British neo-paganism, the entanglement of values, meanings and the environment has emerged as a focus in my work. The one-year field stay (2012-2013) in South West England (especially Bristol) was characterised by a pluralism of methods and I also engaged with the inter- and transdisciplinary religion and ecology debate. My focus was on people's relations with specific environments (human and non-human) in their everyday life. Through the analysis of affective encounters, I was able to show that the striving for a "good life" is to be understood against the background of current ecological challenges. Environmental relations of pagans (be they religious or not) could thereby be asserted "in its own right". Scrutinizing and going beyond the analytical distinction between "nature" and "culture" (and its associated dichotomies) my doctoral dissertation contributed to the cultural anthropological exploration of human-environment relations in general (marked with distinction in 2017, publication as monograph contracted with Reimer).
