I worked in translational biomedical research since my graduation from the University Bayreuth, Germany and was always interested in tissue engineering and tissue regeneration. My expertise is mainly in bioengineering and during my PhD training I gained valuable insights into cell signaling pathway studies and broadened my repertoire of standard molecular biology techniques and cell cultivation. I further started working with animal models of emphysema and fibrosis (instillation of elastase and bleomycin). Transitioning to the laboratory of Prof. Daniel Weiss (University of Vermont, VT, USA) for my first postdoctoral training added expertise in Mass Spectrometry/Proteomics, Glycomics, and progenitor/stem cell biology to my skill set. I was further decellularizing mouse, rat, chicken, emu, pig, and human lungs to study their applicability for lung tissue engineering and as lung assist devices (i.e. ECMO). Thereafter, I was in the laboratory of Vascular Biology with Ass. Prof. Anja Meissner at Lund University, Sweden, working on cardiopulmonary disease mechanisms. Our focus was to understand the role of caradiovascular diseases like heart failure for pulmonary complications. For this I was utilising a sophisticated mouse model to induce myocardial infarction (left anterior descending coronary artery ligation, LAD). Since the lab was also interested in target organ damage I learned to analyze the memory function of the mice by using behavioural studies (i.e. novel object recognition test) and the neuronal network (Golgi Cox staining). In 2021 I transitioned back into industry where I currently work as quality control specialist and research scientist for Xintelas stem cell products.My overall goal is to generate a deeper understanging and knowledge about chronic diseases that can be transferred into treatments and to ultimately help patients.
