ProfessorUniversity Of Alaska Fairbanks Jul 2019 - PresentFairbanks, Ak, UsProfessor for Radar Remote Sensing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am responsible for teaching Microwave, Optical, and Thermal Remote Sensing to graduate students. My research interests are centered on the theory and applications of Microwave Remote Sensing. Technical research includes Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image formation, SAR image analysis, ionospheric and atmospheric correction, and interferometric SAR (InSAR). Applications research is focused on geo- and weather-related hazards. I am a member science team member of the NASA/ISRO SAR mission NISAR and am heavily engaged in capacity building in the field of radar remote sensing. -
Associate ProfessorUniversity Of Alaska Fairbanks Jan 2012 - Jun 2019Fairbanks, Ak, UsJanuary 2012 - June 2019, I was Associate Professor for Radar Remote Sensing at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am responsible for teaching Microwave Remote Sensing to graduate Students at the University. My research interests remain centered on Microwave Remote Sensing including Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image formation, SAR image analysis and correction, interferometric SAR (InSAR), and its applications to monitoring of geodynamics. -
Research ProfessorUniversity Of Alaska Fairbanks Oct 2008 - Jan 2012Fairbanks, Ak, UsMy main interest is the development of advanced SAR, InSAR, PS-InSAR, and PolInSAR techniques and their application to geophysical problems. One of my specific interests focuses on the understanding as well as the detection, modeling, and correction of tropospheric and ionospheric effects in single-pol, dual-pol, and quad-pol SAR and InSAR data. Application of SAR and InSAR to studies of surface deformation, coastal change, tropospheric and ionospheric mapping, and permafrost change is one of my additional focus areas. I am responsible for teaching SAR and InSAR courses at the George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I also teach a course on Statistics and Data Analysis in Geology at UAF. -
Remote Sensing ScientistUniversity Of Alaska Fairbanks Mar 2007 - Sep 2008Fairbanks, Ak, UsResponsible for data quality control of ASF’s synthetic aperture Radar (SAR) data. Development of detection, estimation, and correction methods for ionospheric effects in single-pol, dual-pol, and quad-pol SAR data. Involved in the development of processing algorithms for SAR interferometry, polarimetric SAR interferometry, and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry. Application of SAR and InSAR to studies of surface deformation, coastal change, tropospheric and ionospheric mapping, and permafrost change. Responsible for teaching a SAR course to the North American Ice Service. Involved in maintaining ASF’s science presence by attending and presenting at international conferences on Radar Remote Sensing, and by publishing in scientific journals. -
Chief ScientistAlaska Satellite Facility Sep 2015 - PresentFairbanks, Alaska, UsResponsible for the interaction with the growing SAR user community. My work includes the generation of new value-added products, the prototyping of on-demand services, as well as teaching and training activities to the science and applications communities. -
Senior Remote Sensing ScientistGerman Aerospace Center Oct 2003 - Feb 2007Koeln / Cologne, DeInvolved in a variety of interdisciplinary projects across the whole spectrum of Radar Remote Sensing and beyond (atmospheric mapping with SAR, volcano and earthquake monitoring, traffic monitoring with two-channel SARs, SAR Interferometry, Persistent Scatterer Interferometry, and bistatic SAR). Employed by DLR, but attached as senior researcher and lecturer to the Technical University of Munich (TUM). As an employee at the DLR, assist in the development of traffic detection within the “TerraSAR-X Traffic Products” satellite project. Supervise and guide graduate and post-graduate students at the Technical University of Munich in the formulation of theses and disser-tations. Teach Adjustment Theory, Systems Theory, Signal Processing, and SAR Interferometry in lessons and labs. -
Remote Sensing ScientistTechnische Universität München Aug 2000 - Sep 2003Munich, Bavaria, DePlanned and instructed numerous labs in Stereo-Photogrammetry and Estimation Theory. Conducted my doctoral dissertation on “Advanced SAR Interferometry for the Observation of Polar Glaciers”. Managed and directed all scientific and administrative work at the TUM within the international and interdisciplinary European Union project AMETHYST (Assessment and Monitoring of Hydrographic and Environmental Trends along the Russian Arctic Coast). Developed methods during AMETHYST project for measuring flow, change, and extent of polar glaciers using remote sensing data. These methods combine models and remote sensing data for improved parameter retrieval. Verified lab results and hypotheses in a field environment during a polar expedition to the Russian Arctic ranging from 75-80 degrees North with 100% success rate from August to October 2001.
