project title: Understanding extracellular electron transfer of industrial microorganisms and optimization for production applications Microbial electrosynthesis and electro-fermentation are novel approaches to increase microbial production by stimulating the cellular metabolism electrically. This thesis used a combined approach of in silico and in vivo strategies to understand the fundamentals of microbe-electrode interaction, the foundation and currently the limitation of the technology. Based on a metabolic network of Escherichia coli, several target processes for electro-fermentation were identified while simultaneously the effects of different electron transfer routes were modelled. Further, industrial relevant organisms were screened for their ability of extracellular electron uptake in vivo. The alcohol-producing acetogen, Clostridium autoethanogenum, was studied in-depth as a promising candidate.
