Frederick Charles is a New York-based architectural photographer whose archive of iconic images spans nearly 30 years. His work has appeared in Preservation, Smithsonian, Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture, TIME, Newsweek, Dwell and LIFE magazines; and in books about New York City architecture including New York 2000: Architecture and Urbanism from the Bicentennial to the Millennium, by Robert A.M. Stern; New York: Metropolis of the American Dream by Martin Mayer and Christopher Ouellette; and The Story of 42nd Street by Mary C. Henderson and Alexis Green. Charles works with prominent architects, designers, institutions and editors to photograph arts, entertainment, hospitality, industrial, landscape, preservation, real estate and retail projects.He has documented such major, award-winning New York restoration projects as the Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum, and the New York Botanical Garden Enid Haupt Conservatory, both recipients of the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award; as well as the Eldridge Street Synagogue and Lever House, both winners of American Institute of Architects Awards for historic preservation. Charles exclusively illustrated The Public Art Fund’s catalogue of “Keith Haring On Park Avenue.” His yearlong landscape project, “The Four Seasons: A Year in the Life of an Orchard,” for LIFE Magazine won an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography.
