CurrentCivilian Evidence technician/custodianMaintain the evidentiary value and integrity of all evidence; perform accurate case intake, verify system entry, inspect packaging in accordance to the standards, and preserve the chain of custody.Responsible for the chain of custody which includes security, storage, maintenance, release, and disposal of all logged property and evidence generated from police activity.Serve as the property and evidence liaison between police department personnel and court officials, attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and the public.Communicate with crime victims, family members, and suspects regarding property and evidence matters.Research, analyze and determine the rightful owner of property, evidence, and found items; provide notification to property owners, schedule appointments, release of items, and compose written correspondence, as necessary. Perform investigative research on cases to determine the appropriate disposition based on court documentation and collaboration with the case officer. Process paperwork and perform filing functions, as needed for appropriate retention.Conduct local and LEADS/NCIC computer file searches and queries on weapons andother items of evidence for information; perform FOID background checks on firearmowners prior to transfer and release. Coordinate the submittal of evidence for testing; provide the transportation of evidence to the forensic laboratory. Coordinate the destruction or auction of property and evidence; provide the transportation of items to the appropriate disposal facilities. Present credible testimony in judicial and administrative proceedings. Train, assist and advise police department personnel in the proper evidence procedures, packaging requirements, laws, and case status. Ensure the property evidence room is organized, safe, and clean.
