I entered the business in an unusual way — as a Marine Corps photojournalist in 1983. By the time I retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 I had spent nearly six years at the daily publication Pacific Stars and Stripes in Tokyo and then ended my career managing the Corps’ largest weekly newspaper.The next year I joined The South Bend Tribune staff. I began as a page designer just to get in the door. Within a year I was running the (then) 12-person department. Before long I became a night editor, weekend editor and eventually worked my way to deputy managing editor/production and editing.Won Schurz Communication’s Excellence in News competition, 2003; South Bend Tribune’s Employee of the Year, 2003; Nominated by The Tribune in 2003 and 2004 for Schurz Communication’s James M. Schurz Spirit Award (recognizing outstanding personal commitment and citizenship). Columns and photographs while embedded during Operation Iraqi Freedom become book “Hometown Heroes.” Pacific Stars and Stripes Alumni Association Journalist of the Year, 1992.
