About Fred Kiserem
I founded the Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation (Kiambu, Kenya) in 2016 after being diagnosed with epilepsy myself, and realising the negatively impactful misconceptions of epilepsy within Kenyan society. Many people in Kenya still confuse epilepsy with witchcraft, demon possession, and brain worms. They often think that it's contagious and the punishment of a God. Instead of going for reliable medical treatment, 80% of Kenyans make use of the herbalist (Daily Nation, April 9).After personally experiencing rejection and learning more about the horrific ways in which those with epilepsy are abused and excluded from society, I chose to change societal misconceptions by starting a program which improves awareness within the community: Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation.

Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation is committed to addressing the needs of people living with epilepsy in Kenya in a holistic and integrated manner.I founded the Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation was established in Kiambu, Kenya, in 2016 after being diagnosed with epilepsy (whilst working in Iraq). After returning back to my home in Kenya, I truly discovered the societal misconceptions regarding epilepsy.Many people in Kenya still confuse epilepsy with witchcraft, demon possession, and brain worms. They often think that it's contagious and the punishment of a God.
