The Kiserem Epilepsy awareness foundation is a non-profit making organization which increases societal awareness of epilepsy. Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation is committed to addressing the needs of people living with epilepsy in Kenya in a holistic and integrated manner.I founded the Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation was established in Kiambu, Kenya, in 2016 after being diagnosed with epilepsy (whilst working in Iraq). After returning back to my home in Kenya, I truly discovered the societal misconceptions regarding epilepsy.Many people in Kenya still confuse epilepsy with witchcraft, demon possession, and brain worms. They often think that it's contagious and the punishment of a God. Instead of going for reliable medical treatment, 80% of Kenyans make use of the herbalist (Daily Nation, April 9).After personally experiencing rejection and learning more about the horrific ways in which those with epilepsy are abused and excluded from society, I chose to change societal misconceptions by starting a program which improves awareness within the community: Kiserem Epilepsy Awareness Foundation. We are also working with other organisations across the world, such as Epilepsy Sparks, UK, and Epilepsy Connections Affiliated, Australia.
