Fred Macdonald Work Experience Details
  • Cardinal Analytics Ltd.
    Senior Quantitative Analyst
Cardinal Analytics Ltd. Jun 2016 - Present
    Belfast, United Kingdom
My role at Cardinal Analytics is to lead on the research, development and implementation of quantitative models for the financial technology sector. Initial focus is on the prediction of bond defaults and bond rating transitions.
  • Queens University Belfast
    Student
Queens University Belfast Sep 2015 - Dec 2016
    Belfast, United Kingdom
In September 2015 I enrolled on the MSc in Computational Finance and Trading at Queen’s University Belfast - leaving my job at Queen's in December 2015 to pursue my studies full time. Having worked in IT for many years, I decided to make more direct use of my mathematical background and academic interests, and retrain for a career in quantitative finance.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
    System Architect
    Queen'S University Belfast Nov 2008 - Dec 2015
    Belfast, United Kingdom
Following implementation of Campus Solutions I led the Support and Enhancement team providing user support and developing the functional requirements for enhancements to the system. The role also involved configuring some of the more technical elements of the system, report writing and database update scripts. During this time I became the University’s functional expert in many elements of Campus Solutions. In August 2012 I took on the role of System Architect, providing a more strategic perspective on how the University can make the best use of its investment in PeopleSoft to achieve its organisational goals.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
    Part Time Lecturer
    Queen'S University Belfast Sep 2004 - Aug 2015
    Belfast, United Kingdom
I have lectured in Information Management and Financial Management since 2004 as part of Queen’s University’s MSSc in Organisation and Management. I have also supervised dissertation students as part of the same programme.I have attended and presented at a number of HE conferences, in the UK, Ireland and the USA.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
    Project Manager
    Queen'S University Belfast Sep 2005 - Oct 2008
    Belfast, United Kingdom
In September 2005 I was asked to manage the project to replace the University’s in-house student information system. My role was: to lead the internal business review; to prepare the specification of requirements, ITT and internal business case for the new system; to manage the full procurement process; and to lead all aspects of the implementation project. This was a significant role which involved managing a team of 17, including 5 external contractors, and which reported to a Steering Committee chaired by the Chief Operating Officer. Taking the project to contract stage involved preparing a number of high-level presentations, detailed tender documents and successfully arguing the case with the University’s Senate for the budget to buy and implement the Oracle database, Campus Solutions and other relevant PeopleSoft software. Post contract, leading the implementation involved an additional range of skills – particularly in terms of influencing, persuasion, analysis and problem solving.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
    Manager Of Student Systems
    Queen'S University Belfast Feb 1998 - Aug 2005
    Belfast, United Kingdom
Manager of Student SystemsThe purpose of this role was to plan and manage the delivery of the in-house student information system in line with institutional priorities. This had a functional dimension, in that my team provided first line user support and prepared the specifications of requirements for any new developments, and a technical dimension, in that the same team wrote the software that provided the solutions. I led the technical team and was also actively involved in drafting the policies and procedures that governed the practicalities of student administration.
  • Cfm / Fujitsu
    Team Leader
    Cfm / Fujitsu Apr 1996 - Jan 1998
    Belfast, United Kingdom
At CFM I led a small team providing outsourced support for the NI Housing Executive’s core systems and for a Dublin based finance house, Lombard and Ulster. My role was to lead the technical team in delivering the relevant service contracts, and to develop productive relationships with the client organisations. Based in the strength of the relationship with Lombard and Ulster I led the successful bid to prepare their core system for European Monetary Union, and then the subsequent delivery of the enhanced system. My role also involved providing ad-hoc pre-sales technical advice and support for other contract bids.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
    Programmer / Analyst
    Queen'S University Belfast Nov 1990 - Mar 1996
    Belfast, United Kingdom
My first role at Queen’s was as a programmer/analyst developing small applications using the Ingres database and C. I was then asked to lead the development of the Direct Admissions System for a consortium of universities under the MAC Initiative. This involved building relationships with senior staff from a number of UK universities, understanding their pressures and requirements, and leading the complex discussions and negotiations that took place throughout the development process. There was also a strongly technical dimension to the role, and I led a small development team in designing and coding the solution, again in Ingres and C.
