XCellAssay was founded following the development, in the Schaufele laboratory at UCSF, of an innovative, next generation diagnostic platform that will alter how a patients' and consumers' analytes (particularly hormones) are measured in serum and urine. UCSF has applied for a patent on the invention. XCellAssay has licensing agreements with UCSF, has conducted pilot clinical trials and is developing the technologies for introduction in direct-to-consumer areas related to detecting the chemical pollutants in your body. Our research at UCSF is thematically centered around a Molecular Endocrinology. There is strong emphasis on endrocrine-regulated cancers, particularly breast and prostate cancer. Those studies range across many related basic disciplines, particularly the influences of nuclear architecture on gene expression, and the novel structure/function studies on transcription (co)factors. I also started a small company, XCellAssay, based in part on findings from the UCSF laboratory.

Helix Twelve Pharmaceuticals was founded by a colleague, Dr. Mas Tanabe, based upon novel steroid-base drugs he developed while at SRI International. I contributed to Helix Twelve by discussing and advising on scientific issues, particularly the position of pharmaceutical leads within the current, emerging and future marketplace.
