In 1999, I created the first incarnation of Intermedia Services and set out to bridge perceived gaps between local information suppliers and consumers, through writing for websites, training for community newspaper staff and volunteers, along with creating publicity and providing articles to local, regional and national publications. Major projects included the Eriskay Causeway Information Service which provided a constant flow of information about the building of the £10m causeway and the ferry link to Barra. I worked with and for Western Isles Enterprise, HITRANS, the Western Isles NHS Board, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and a variety of other community agencies.Now the key element is EVENTS - a free monthly magazine on newsprint with a pick-up of around 12,500 in the summer and 9,500 in the winter and a linked website - along with HEB Magazine, founded in 2002, and The Skye Magazine (2006). Since 2015 these magazines are free publications. A key element is now a suite of related websites - all accessed via our www.hebevents.com portal, where EVENTS can also be downloaded for free. These include the business directory www.businessguidehebrides.com, for the Outer Hebrides, Skye and Raasay. Also covering the Isles of Skye and Raasay is the news and information site theskyetimes.co.uk. This is focused on providing daily news to these island communities. It has its own Facebook page and Twitter feed #theskyetimesThere are also Facebook pages and Twitter accounts for HEB+The Skye Magazines; for EVENTS; and for www.welovestornoway.com which now attracts 30,000+ user sessions a week. The operating company is now Intermedia Services (Stornoway) Ltd. My earlier publications include Glimpses of Stornoway, a look at the history of Stornoway from the Vikings to the 1950s. Other books and booklets include a History of Lewis Crofters co-operative over its first 50 years and a booklet on the Herring Girls in Stornoway.
