Plant ManagerDixon Canning Corporation (Campbell Soup) Jan 1977 - Jan 1999Dixon CaliforniaCampbell Soup purchased the T.H. Richards Processing plant in 1977 & I stayed on as Plant Manager. This plant grew considerably over the years adding additional capacity & operations including "bin filling" aseptic tomato paste & "hot fill & cool" bulk dice tomato operations. In 1983 I had the pleasure of working with Dr. William Hildebolt in his development of Campbell's "Prego" Tomato Pasta Sauce. I invented & installed a "Insoluble Solids Transfer System" which complemented the Prego processing system by adding insoluble solids (tomato cellulose) to the tomato paste used in Prego therefore "increasing viscosity" & substantially lowering the required tomato solids in finished product. This system allowed Campbell to reduce the amount of tomato paste in Prego formulation from 10.5% to 7.7% which saves "millions" in ingredient cost. My "Insoluble Solids Transfer System" is still in use today in CSC & J.G. Boswell Tomato Companies. During my tenure at Campbell Soup I had the opportunity to travel & work with tomato processing plants in Stockton California, Napoleon Ohio, Paris Texas, Camden New Jersey, Los Mochis Mexico & Shepparton Australia as well as working with many of their finished product processing plants on tomato based product formulation. I also worked closely with Steve Stewart & the "Process Research Division" of Campbell's in Davis California where Steve & I developed a "Tomato Pectin Process System" which allowed additional yield in viscosity based formulation products such as ketchup & sauces. In 1999 I took the opportunity to design & build a new tomato paste plant in Colusa California.

Richards Processing was a tomato paste processing plant which we built "from the ground & up" which produced bulk tomato paste first in steel drums. The primary finished product customer was Campbell Soup Company which consumed approximately 70% of our finished product. This plant was the newest & most efficient of its time and is still producing (Campbell Soup) today. Campbell Soup bought this plant (& me) in 1977.

They also produced tomato paste, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato ketchup and a host of other finished tomato based products. I began my career with Bercutt-Richards as a "Mechanic Trainee" and eventually worked up to "Preparation Department Supervisor" & "Assistant Plant Manager". Borden Company bought Bercutt -Richards Packing in 1968 & after five years of a "non-compete" contract Mr. Tom Richards invited me to help him design & build the new "T.H. Richards Processing Plant" in Dixon, California.
