The main aim of the project was to personalize the fitting and the evaluation of hearing aids using EEG responses. This was a multi-site project including our group at Manchester, one group at the University of Southampton, and one group at Imperial College London. I supervised the work done in Manchester and coordinated with the groups in Southampton and Imperial College. The Manchester group focused on the clinical side of the project and was in charge of recruiting and testing hearing impaired patients (whereas the two other sites focused on the engineering side of the project). Our work established two proof-of-concepts for new diagnostics tests of hearing impairments (cochlear synaptopathy diagnostic and cochlear dead regions diagnostic). Show less

I developed methods to help diagnose the causes of hearing deficits more precisely. I developed methods aiming to: 1) differentiate between damage to the inner and outer hair cells, using ABRs, and 2) relate temporal processing deficits to auditory deafferentation (cochlear synaptopathy), using computational methods. I worked in collaboration with senior clinical audiologists and contributed to the training of junior clinical audiologists.

I investigated the effect of hearing loss and ageing on people’s ability to hear fine temporal cues, which is particularly important for speech understanding in noise. I showed that this ability deteriorates with age, in a way that is independent from the deterioration of hearing thresholds. I also worked on the importance of acclimatization to hearing aids to get the most benefit from them.
