About Frederick Howard
Making a physical object move in an interesting way is one of the most rewarding things an engineer can achieve. Whether it’s a remote control robot arm or a car that drives itself, there’s something about seeing the thing you made move around that makes all the late nights fixing bugs worth it. I’ve achieved this motion in projects and hobbies, and I’m working to build a career in robotics engineering to achieve it in my professional life as well. I built my first robot in middle school - a remote control car that picked up pennies and ping pong balls, moved them around, and earned me multiple medals in state Science Olympiad competitions. Since then there have been robot arms, tennis ball launchers, and even an autonomous navigational robot. My projects have given me a strong background in hardware, and my Electrical and Computer Engineering degree has given me the software skills and theory necessary to be a confident robotics engineer.

Controls Engineer
Researcher
Working with University of Auckland professor Nirmal Nair, I used separate software and simulation techniques to model AC distribution grids using OpenDSS and DC microgrids using Opal-RT. I then developed my systems engineering toolkit to integrate the models together, solving timing issues and building cross-platform connectivity between a time independent powerflow model and a real time simulation model. It was really interesting to take my modeling experience to the next level, and build my systems integration skills. It was also amazing to spend a summer living halfway around the world in beautiful New Zealand.
Electrical Facilities Intern
At GlobalFoundries, I had an amazing opportunity for hands-on experience in the power systems field. I worked with EasyPower to retroactively model systems throughout the site, learning a lot about power system components and their operation. I also used my experience with R to develop new methods for querying information from these models. It was really interesting to see the backend of power distribution, and how distribution grids can be designed for resilience.
Independent Researcher
Working with RPI Professor Luigi Vanfretti, I created a simulation of a home-scale solar installation using Typhoon HIL software. I then compared my results with data from a real system (my own house’s solar panels), and tuned my simulation to match real world parameters. I was able to learn more about PV systems, and built skills working with simulation and data analysis software. It was valuable to apply my academic skills in a concrete setting, and continue my exploration of renewable power.
Technical Intern
At SEED, I learned a lot about the solar panel installation process, and how to ensure that that cog runs smoothly in the energy production and distribution machine. I worked with a team to plan new installations using Helioscope design software, do the installation ground work, and repair problems with existing systems. It was really interesting to learn the fundamentals of solar energy generation, and I hope to one day learn more about how that energy can be accepted into a power grid.
Manufacturing Technician
At Vassays, I worked in a fabrication lab and was exposed to procedures for manually adding elements to printed circuit boards. I learned a lot about the building and troubleshooting techniques used on electronic systems, and the boards I built were incorporated into chemical ecology research equipment. It was intriguing to learn about the manufacturing process, and to get hands-on experience working with printed circuit boards.
