Fred Langheim has carried a longstanding interest in academic psychiatry, neuroimaging and the promotion of mental health. Through two years of psychiatric neuroimaging research at the NIMH, he joined interests in medicine, radiology, and the emergence of mind from brain in the field of psychiatric neuroimaging. That experience led to an MD/PhD program at the University of Minnesota during which he earned his neuroscience PhD using magnetoencephalography to better understand interactions within the brain . During his psychiatry residency, he began his ongoing collaboration with Giulio Tononi at UW Madison, studying functional connectivity in the brain in mental illness and mental health.In addition to scientific and computer programming language skills, Dr Langheim is conversational in German and Italian. This has facilitated professional experiences outside the US, including work with psychiatric patients in Bari, Italy. This focus on communication, combined with life experiences ranging from professional dishwashing, living abroad, and music performance, to triathlons, poetry and baking, aids him in the establishment of rapport with patients.In 2010 he was nominated as a fellow to The Group for Advancement of Psychiatry, working with the committee on the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of mental health.He is a staff psychiatrist at Dean Clinic Fish Hatchery, medical director of consultation and liaison psychiatry at St Mary’s Hospital, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UW Madison, and continues research collaborations and speaking as well as creative writing, and writing on mental health promotion and the prevention of mental illness.
