About Steve Thornborough

Hi, I'm Steve!Physicist, Inventor, Designer, Communicator.I am first and foremost a physicist, applying my fundamental science experience and strong academic background to all undertakings. After nine years of study, and five years physics research work, I made the transition to industry. My postdoctoral work was high-speed photography of complex fluid drops on surfaces, at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. My PhD was on magnetic vortices in superconductors, with a focus on high-speed magneto-optical imaging and scanning SQUID microscopy, at the University of Wollongong, Australia.I once believed I was purely a scientist, but surprised myself again and again by finding my passion in designing the tests and building the apparatus - combining fluidics, mechanics, optics, cryogenics, and of course making it look cool. I design and build using rapid prototyping, ecodesign principles, system-level thinking, critical analysis, and project management of self and others. My biggest design success was a dedicated environmental chamber to dispense and heat single drops at low humidity, then film collisions with a surface, ultimately aiming to increase energy efficiency in industrial powder production. My inventions include new physics-based approaches to humidifying gas in a breathing device, a minimal cost humidity sensor, an industrial viscometer needing only a single drop of liquid, and a novel design for a superconducting vortex diode. These feature strong mechanical design, environmental considerations, multi-sensor systems, novel components, hardware and software control, and data processing/analysis techniques. I'm also passionate about communicating science and the environment, having lectured and demonstrated for several years at the University of Auckland and the University of Wollongong. Outside of academia, I enjoy conferences and networking, presenting science to a general audience, contributing to museum exhibits, school science and maths events, tutoring, and science advising ("Believable Science - bringing real science to creative works of fiction") including the award-winning Fringe Festival-touring 'Alone'.

Steve Thornborough Work Experience Details
  • Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
    Senior Product Development Engineer
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Aug 2021 - Present
    Auckland, New Zealand
  • The Macdiarmid Institute
    Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The Macdiarmid Institute Jul 2018 - Jun 2021
    Auckland, New Zealand
Superconductivity Methodology & DevelopmentI developed and implemented apparatus for a large optical cryostat, including addition of magnetic field coils, magneto-optical imaging, and high-speed video capability.I also worked on a small-scale cryostat system to investigate dynamic changes in superconducting grain linking by high-speed magneto-optical imaging.
  • The University Of Auckland
    Research Fellow
The University Of Auckland Jan 2017 - Jun 2021
    Auckland, New Zealand
I researched the dynamics of high-speed fluid interactions with surfaces, such as droplet impacts. My work focuses both on interesting fluids (such as non-Newtonian fluids and ferrofluid), and interesting surfaces (such as superhydrophobic surfaces with novel micro- and nano-structuring).My main focus was on examining stickiness in collisions between microliter-scale droplets of concentrated milk (a shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluid) and stainless steel surfaces using high-speed video, for application to milk powder production.
  • Institute For Superconducting And Electronic Materials, University Of Wollongong
    Superconductor Physicist
Institute For Superconducting And Electronic Materials, University Of Wollongong Feb 2011 - Dec 2016
    Wollongong, Australia
My research aims to further the understanding of vortex behaviour in superconductorsin three different aspects: the static distribution of magnetic vortices in a thin filmsuperconductor; the dynamics of these vortices when the external magnetic field isvaried; and controlled vortex motion to create a superconducting diode. My current work centres on high-speed magneto-optical imaging as a technique fordynamically investigating the magnetic field around thin film samples of YBa2Cu3O7-x, andsubsequently calculating the dynamic behaviour of current in superconducting samples.
  • University Of Wollongong
    Laboratory Demonstrator
University Of Wollongong Jul 2010 - Nov 2015
    Wollongong, Australia
I worked as a demonstrator in the physics teaching labs at the University of Wollongong, this involves: • Assisting students in first and second year physics subjects to understand and complete practical physics experiments for assessment• Verbally assessing students’ understanding of the experiment in progress• Marking experiment reportsI had a supervisory role in 2015, which meant that I was responsible for 40+ students in class, along with assisting 3 other demonstrators, enforcing lab safety and resolving equipment issues.
