  • Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarhip Pageant Program And Mr. /Miss Collegiate Pageant
    Founder/President
Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarhip Pageant Program And Mr. /Miss Collegiate Pageant Jan 1990 - Present
    Houston, Texas Area
The Mr. Collegiate African American™ Scholarship Pageant Program, the first of its kind in the world, has provided positive imagery and scholarships for Black college men since 1990. The program was created to provide recognition of the Black college men at HBCU's and provide equity as the Miss Collegiate African American was for Black women. Very few schools were electing College Kings and the program provided the opportunity for this purpose. The pageant is also the catalyst for the growth of campus kings programs on college campuses that elevates and promotes the young men as leaders and ambassadors. The pageant empowers the men and counteracts the negative imagery as perpetuated in the society, mainly through the media. "We believe that more Black men are succeeding than what we hear and to focus on them is better for our community. Therefore our focus is on the three out of four, not one out of four" as the media and prognosticators would have us to believe. The first King was Mr. Charles Clemons, representing Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in April 1992 at Prairie View A&M University. There were 13 men in the competition. Since then more than 35 HBCU's have established Black College Kings and the program continues to grow. You can say that we started a movement for the recognition of the Black college men in America and around the world! The Mr. & Miss Collegiate Program is designed to develop, promote and provide opportunities for college students to earn scholarships and to serve as role models in their communities.
