In January of 2024, I started in the role of Equipment Coordinator for a big project in the Port of Antwerp, namely Project ONE of the company INEOS. My task consists of managing the repairs and maintenance of all the Sarens cranes on site. For this, I work together with a team of three technicians and one assistant. Under my watch, the fleet has grown from six cranes in January, to around 40 in April, and again to 60 by August. It consists mostly out of telescopic cranes between 50 and 200 tons, but also some bigger cranes, such as a 500 ton telescopic crane and crawler cranes up to 600 tons. At INEOS, safety is also of the utmost importance, which can provide some challenges in how to organize your work, but in the end, the most important part of the job is that everyone can return home safely.

I work as part of the Global Fleet Support team at Sarens. We provide a world wide troubleshooting service to keep our cranes running in optimal conditions and avoid downtime. We solve technical issues that arise on a day to day base, as well as plan timely maintenance. If the issue cannot be resolved by remote assistance, we fly around the world to provide our technical expertise on site.For example, when one of our cranes had an accident in Papua New Guinea, we flew out there to assess the situation. After comparing different scenarios, we decided to dismantle the boom and cabin and have it shipped back to Europe. At our HQ, we could perform all the specialist repair works that were necessary. The parts were then sent back and installed on the crane to make it fully operational again. Another big project I was involved in, was the revision of one of our oldest and biggest cranes, the Demag PC9600, which is currently working in Brazil. It required new cables and sheaves, painting work, engine repairs, and some electrical issues to be resolved. We assembled a team of technicians who were able to complete the job with the help of our preparation work and support.

During the last year of my Master's degree, I completed my thesis at the Belgian company named STAS. They specialize in constructing trailers for bulk transport, mainly tipper and walking floor trailers. The thesis aimed to solve a problem on certain walking floors. It involved extensive use of Siemens Simcenter 3D to simulate the non-linear friction behavior between two moving parts. Different simulations were ran to compare adjustments in order to arrive at a more optimal solution. The solutions were presented in a comparative matter, on which STAS could later base their decision for improvement. Moreover, the method which was set up could later be applied to different connections which result in similar issues.

They provide custom solutions to transport the heaviest and largest objects, such as wind mill blades, electrical transformers, or large tanks. The internship project aimed at designing a pneumatical locking mechanism to safeguard extendable low-bed trailers at the desired length. It combined the use of CAD-software (mainly SOLIDWORKS) with a real life testing environment.
