I’ve been creating world-class VR and AR applications for the last three years, both as a developer and a project lead. In close collaboration with the domain experts from Siemens Gamesa we were able to replace several hours of technically complex collaborative training in the offshore industry with an accurate virtual reality simulation of the training environment. Starting the project with participating in the training, my task was to translate the work process and machinery into a virtual reality application running on state-of-the-art hardware: from crunching CAD models, 3D modelling and animation, setting up the 3D environment to programming the systems and user interactions. I spent by far the most hours on the project dedicating myself fully to bring about this amazing product. This was my first real Unity project.In the next chapter at Kanda I was sent to the innovation villa at Maersk Drilling (MD) to work closely with their team in this newly founded agile innovation hub, leading the digitalization efforts at the company. On a daily basis I prototyped new ideas and improved on existing ones while collaborating with drillers, engineers and other experts. We were trying to change the mindset of the traditional rigid enterprise to a more agile and innovative one. After a while I started working on AR: in a couple of days I had to become familiar with the AR platforms so I could decide which was most suitable for inspection assistance. The choice fell on HoloLens. I developed a few prototypes for the HoloLens and MD got convinced to start an actual project. It turned into the flagship of the innovation hub and I became the project lead on a team that grew to eight people at its peak. The project was featured in several news outlets including an article by Microsoft that was tweeted by the official HoloLens account. Later I brought in Placenote on the project to add better SLAM and persistent maps on a mobile version.
