I built this national firm from the ground up, creating a 20+ state network with state-based lobbying firms in each and an additional presence in the U.K. The company is recognized as one of the first federal government affairs teams in Washington, DC to deploy a FedState Network. This initiative leverages federal and state partnerships as part of our normal contracts strategy to connect clients with clients across the network by identifying and balancing synergies for both APS and State clients.Within my firm, I built a Tribal practice (Tribal Solutions Network) based on the FedState Network and leading to APS representing 5 Tribes and Tribal organizations in DC, which is on par with large national law/lobbying firms working in Indian Country. In the course of building the organization, I have written and developed legislation presented to Congress.DELIVERED RESULTS:► Secured multimillion-dollars in economic development funding for key client after writing and developing legislation. Spearheaded passage through House and Senate, and ultimately the legislation was signed by the President.► Developed content-level expertise on Tribal broadband; contributed articles to Tribal publications, led webinars for large Tribal organizations, and spoke to groups as subject matter expert on Tribal broadband.► Raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for federal candidates, both personal giving and hosting fundraisers, supporting key client portfolio.► Strategically negotiated Tribal representative appearances before Congressional committees and secured legislation for Tribal clients.

I reported directly to the President and held accountability for managing client communication and support by drafting key legislation and representing clients during Congressional, staff, and administrative official meetings. My primary areas of focus included health care, agriculture, pharmaceutical, alternative energy, homeland security, and environmental issues. In the course of my work, I developed case statements for Congressionally-directed funding projects. I also established relationships with key Congressional players and identified new business opportunities to help expand our national reach.DELIVERED RESULTS:► Partnered with key clients, federal government representatives, and staff to impact legislation, secure Congressionally Directed funding, and pitch special projects and initiatives.► Wrote testimony prior to the hearing of the Joint Economic Committee of the House and Senate on specialty pharmaceutical company abuses.► Worked directly with the U.S. Department of Justice to save 5 Assistant District Attorney positions in Milwaukee County.► Saved client hospital from Affordable Care Act closure by writing language included in the bill to carve out the physician-owned hospital.► Secured high paying clients in the emergency response space, working directly with the Department of Defense, FEMA, and Health and Human Services to pitch client’s emergency response project.

As a new member of the community, I organized and ran a campaign against an incumbent Republican in a predominantly Republican district with a 42% Democratic makeup. Against the odds, I raised $84K and designed my own campaign collateral, including mailings, billboards, and flyers. I also aired 2 commercials on a local ABC affiliate. Of the 42K ballots cast, I lost by 680 votes against a strong Republican. The race was recognized as the closest, non-targeted race in the state that year. While I didn’t win the seat, I gained a critical, grass-roots understanding and experience in the political space. I also had a lot of fun and met some wonderful people.

Working for a man who would become my mentor and close friend, I served as Constituencies Director for the Levin for Congress campaign, 1996, Field Director for Levin for Congress campaign, 1998, Campaign Manager for Levin for Congress campaign in 2000 and 2004, and Community Relations Director for Congressman Sander Levin, 2004-2006. I also served as Legislative Assistant for Congressman Sander Levin from 1997-2000.DELIVERED RESULTS:► Managed campaigns for 2 presidential races in the 12th CD of Michigan with recognition for success and outperformance of campaign statistics.► Organized community events around social security for the Congressman; appeared on television on his behalf.► Contributed to the passage of one of Congressman’s signature pieces of legislation, the Drug Free Communities Act. Participated in the Bipartisan Working Group on Youth Violence following the Columbine HS disaster and 1 of 4 staffers who developed the working group’s final report to Congress.

Leading a team of 4 direct and 16 total reports, I helped transform the union into a political powerhouse in the state of Michigan during the 2002 and 2004 campaigns, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support more than a dozen local candidates in their successful run for office. My efforts earned national recognition with the union for successful work within the field of organized labor.
