  • Hgst, A Western Digital Company
    Senior Technologist
Hgst, A Western Digital Company Aug 2011 - Present
    Boulder, Co
Servo representative to company wide committee charged with defining/designing embedded firmware (FW) architecture for future productsPrincipal FW engineer responsible for rewriting servo code application interface to the rest of the drive FW* Design and implement new servo features for High Performance Enterprise disk drives* Position Error Decomposition: created a tool in Matlab to “decompose” measured head vibration into portions that can be attributed to various mechanical vibration modes* Disk Drive Manufacturing Tests Development* Redesign of companies frequency analysis tools
  • R T Consulting, Llc
    Owner
    R T Consulting, Llc Aug 2003 - Aug 2011
Provide consulting for embedded systems with a specialization of design and implementation of real-time digital control systems. CONTRACTED CONSULTANT – DATAPLAY HOLDING, INC., Longmont, CO (2003-2011)* Design and implement digital augmentation for a continuous time optical disk servo controller.* Develop specifications and implemented multi-processor communication architecture.* Create Matlab–based data analysis tools. * Modifications of the RTOS (FreeRTOS) implemented on an Atmel mirco processor* Work resulted in $1.3 million contract engineering agreement for DataPlay, Inc., generated four patent filings.CONTRACTED CONSULTANT – TOSHIBA AMERICA INFORMATION SYSTEMS, Fremont, CA (2004-2008)Toshiba purchased the US hard disk design group from Panasonic, a contracted client of R.T. Consulting, LLC. I was one of four engineers tasked with re-implementing the Panasonic capability on a Toshiba drive, requiring a complete re-write of the external Matlab package and significant changes to the Toshiba drive FW.* Responsible for 100% of the Matlab implementation and ~50% of the drive FW changes. * Ported Matlab-based drive debug tool set to a new drive architecture.* Demonstrated the full package on several Toshiba hard drives in 4 months, making drive testing and development dramatically easier and faster.* Helped design and implement all aspects of the drive servo control system.CONTRACTED CONSULTANT – PANASONIC USDC, Fremont, CA (2002-2004) Working directly under lead technical officer, developed a competitive analysis capability for Panasonic.* Developed the tools and HW necessary to completely characterize a competitor's servo design.* Performed detailed analysis of 6 competitive products. * Produced a complete competitive servo analysis toolset including custom Matlab-based data analysis tools, drive FW, a custom FPGA-based analysis board, and wrote all VHDL code for the FPGA
  • University Of Colorado
    Adjunct Professor
University Of Colorado Aug 2007 - Dec 2008
    Boulder, Co
Taught Senior/Masters level Control Systems Analysis class (ECEN4138/5138) during the fall semester of 2007 and 2008
  • Dataplay
    Servo Engineer
    Dataplay 2001 - 2003
SENIOR SERVO ENGINEER (2001 – 2002)Working on a 1” read/write optical drive, helped implement a digital servo system spread across two processors, a micro and a DSP; all code written in C. Had primary responsibility for all code on an ST proprietary DSP, including : * General servo code: Seeks, track following, error handling and recovery, media defect handling, etc.* Implementation of the interrupt system on the DSP and communications with the on-board micro* Servo development tools, in-drive Bode, data collection, etc* New servo calibration routines which ran in both the factory and in the field.
  • Quantum
    Lead Servo Engineer
    Quantum 1996 - 2001
    Milpitas, Ca
LEAD SERVO ENGINEER - QUANTUM/MAXTOR (1996-2001)Lead engineer for a team of 3 to 5 servo engineers. Projects included successful development of two 3.5 inch drives, advanced development of a 1 GB per surface 1 inch micro drive. The two 3.5 inch products were both profitable and rated ”best in class” in performance. * Two 3.5 inch SCSI disk drive products, Quantum Viking II and Atlas V. Average seek times: 7.8 ms (Viking II) and 6.3 ms (Atlas V).* Followed drive design from conception through to production and customer qualifications. * My team had full responsibility for all implementing and maintaining all interrupt driven control system code* Implemented design of VCM and spindle control systems. * F/A during pre-production and production prototype builds. * Completely re-wrote the original ~10,000 lines assembly code used for VCM control in ‘C’. Final code was within 10% of original assembly code cycles and equal in code size, with the same execution time as the original assembly code.* Successfully implemented a disk drive servo code in ‘C’ for the first time; this is now industry standard.* Code was ported to three different microprocessors during the 1-year duration of the project., and shipped on 3 consecutive high performance SCSI drives.
  • Conner Peripherals
    Servo Engineer
    Conner Peripherals 1993 - 1996
Managed a team of servo engineers and technicians. Had individual responsibility for implementation of complete disk drive servo code set for high performance 3.5” disk drive. The entire system was written in “C” for a 20 MIP fixed point DSP. Projects involved:* Implementation of a basic RTOS, external communications and bring up the basic ASIC operation* Design and implementation of servo system architectures for future drives.* Evaluation of multiple microprocessors and ASIC architectures* Design and layout of prototype PCBAs
  • Sandia National Laboratories
    Member Of Technical Staff
Sandia National Laboratories Jun 1981 - Aug 1993
    Livermore, Ca
Advanced Electronics Department 1988 - 1993Lead software engineer for project to design and implement parallel networks of 3 Texas Instruments C40 DSP’s. Responsibilities included porting augmenting single processor RTOS to run in a 3 processor star network, implementing all system boot code and much of the final application code.Primary application was high-speed signal/image processing.Initiated an R/D program to design an adaptive a 6 degree of freedom satellite control systemSystem Analysis Department 1981 - 1983Participated in a 12 member team charged with defining Sandia’s role in the nation’s Strategic Defense Initiative. Helped write two program plans for new initiatives; both were funded.
