The ECPLS delivers the Diploma for the University of Edinburgh and nearly 1,000 law graduates passed through the centre during the time I was there.I was the Senior Tutor for Criminal Court Practice and Criminal Advocacy from 2010 to 2017 and from 2010 to 2016 ran an elective course in Advocacy in summary criminal trials.

I was honoured to serve as the examiner in criminal and civil procedure for The Law Society of Scotland. Students wishing to qualify as a Scottish solicitor without studying Scots law at a Scottish university can take a series of examinations in the Law Society's professional subjects; of which one is Procedure.

I was a member of the Home and Community Rule Commission chaired by Sir Menzies Campbell QC MP and established by the Scottish Liberal Democrats to consider how the United Kingdom can be reformed to give Scotland and the communities that make up Scotland greater financial responsibility within a federal United Kingdom. Many of the ideas that were first published by in our report went onto inform the decisions of the Smith Commission and eventually the Scotland Act 2012.

The first Meadows Festival was in 1974 and since then the Festival has been an annual feature of the calender (excepting a break 2006-7). The Festival Committee work hard throughout the year to put on the event, usually held on the first weekend in June, and I really enjoyed helping to run the Festival as Convenor in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

After 4 years of work I came within 316 votes of winning Edinburgh South for the Liberal Democrats. A disappointment, but I was delighted to receive a record 14,899 votes.

I believe that it is important that local people take a stand for their community. I have lived in Newington on and off since 1989 and I was first elected as a City Councillor in 1999. I represented Newington Ward on the City of Edinburgh Council for eight years. I was re-elected in 2003 and stood down in 2007 to run for Parliament.In my eight years on the Council I was convenor of the South Edinburgh Local Development Committee; which focused on community planning, community safety and environmental issues in the southern part of the City. For six years I was the Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson on the Council. I successfully proposed Traders and Business Parking Permits and lead the campaign against the Congestion Charging Scheme in the city.In Newington Ward I worked to protect the historic character of the ward. This included successfully opposing the demolition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's childhood home to allow the construction of a McDonald's drive thru and promoting the conversion of the building to become the new home of the Dunedin School with the new Conan Doyle Medical Centre in its garden. I also successfully represented my constituents at a public local inquiry in respect of the Newington Campus planning development and campaigned for improved local bus services such as the 24, 38, 42, 41 and 67.
