I am an Advocate in private practice in Scotland and a Barrister in practice in England and Wales.Delighted to be recognised as a Leading Silk (Tier 1) for Crime & Regulatory work in Scotland in the latest edition of the Legal 500:: 'A silk who demonstrates in-depth knowledge and focus. I am instructed in the High Court of Justiciary Appeal Court and Sheriff Appeal Court, but also appear in the Sheriff Court (including the Extradition Court at Edinburgh Sheriff Court), the High Court of Justiciary as a court of first instance and the Court of Session. In England and Wales my practice focuses on extradition law and the representation of persons subject to requests under the Extradition Act 2003.

    I believe that it is important that local people take a stand for their community. I have lived in Newington on and off since 1989 and I was first elected as a City Councillor in 1999. I represented Newington Ward on the City of Edinburgh Council for eight years. I was re-elected in 2003 and stood down in 2007 to run for Parliament.In my eight years on the Council I was convenor of the South Edinburgh Local Development Committee; which focused on community planning, community safety and environmental issues in the southern part of the City. For six years I was the Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson on the Council. I successfully proposed Traders and Business Parking Permits and lead the campaign against the Congestion Charging Scheme in the city.In Newington Ward I worked to protect the historic character of the ward. This included successfully opposing the demolition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's childhood home to allow the construction of a McDonald's drive thru and promoting the conversion of the building to become the new home of the Dunedin School with the new Conan Doyle Medical Centre in its garden. I also successfully represented my constituents at a public local inquiry in respect of the Newington Campus planning development and campaigned for improved local bus services such as the 24, 38, 42, 41 and 67.
