Fredrick Mugira is an award-winning journalist renowned for his expertise in water, wildlife and climate change reporting. He is a highly acclaimed National Geographic Storytelling Explorer and Pulitzer Center Grantee. With a Master’s Degree in Communication for Development from Malmo University in Sweden, Fredrick has demonstrated his commitment to advancing water, climate change and wildlife journalism and media training across Africa, Europe, Asia, the USA and South America.KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:• Recipient of prestigious awards including the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Award for Excellence in Science Communications, CNN/Multichoice African Journalist award and recipient of the Fetisov Journalism Award for Outstanding investigative reporting among several other international and continent journalism awards.• Bertha Challenge 2022 Fellow. In a yearlong Bertha fellowship, Fredrick conducted an in- depth investigation into plastic pollution and its ramifications on water bodies, particularly focusing on the Western Rift Valley lakes in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which ultimately feed into the Nile River.• Founder of Water Journalists Africa, a non-profit media development organization with a membership spanning 50 African countries, dedicated to reporting on water, climate change, and wildlife. Our flagship project, InfoNile, launched in 2017, is a pioneering geojournalism initiative that fosters cross-border collaborations, provides training in environmental and data reporting for journalists, and supports investigative storytelling in the Nile basin. We also operate Nilewell, a platform facilitating collaboration among environmental researchers, scientists, and journalists, aiming to connect, share research and data, and enhance their capacity and knowledge in science and data-based journalism.
