All my life I have lived outside the rails of what people consider normal. I have been called controversial, successful, interesting, but I have always believed that people are born to stand out, not just to fit in. My ride from a small town in Utah has been an interesting one, I have been part of building a successful Food & Drug company, I started from the ground up building Fred Smith’s Auto Group, which at one time, had as many as nine franchises. I have met some of the biggest names in entertainment and sports, and politics. I have gone through big pains in my life, experiencing the loss of a daughter from a heart disease and my father, and the biggest believer in me, at age 58. Through it all I have learned that is not about “who is right”, but “what is right”. I tried to leave each and every day by treating people as I would like myself, my family and Judy to be treated, and every day I tried to be a little bit better than I was the day before and provide one random act of kindness for someone that may or may not know.Along the way we created employee focus groups at Smith’s, in-store customer phones that they can pick up, talk to a real person, and get answers to their questions. We had Easter egg hunts, coloring contests, and much more. At the Fred Smith’s Auto Group, we would start Christmas In July, Silent Sunday, and the Fred Smith’s road angel. All this for the benefit and fun of our customers.
