About Grant Johnston

Officially you can call me a Designer; unofficially I am a creator, I create problems, I create mischief and I create solutions. I am openly a perfectionist; I look for the detail that transforms something from being average to something that is truly amazing; something that will enhance the way we interact with the world. I see perfectionism as a gift rather than a hindrance and a place that is reserved for very few. Managing Director, designer, restaurateur, builder, project manager are all areas that I have immersed myself in over the past twenty-two years. Individually they have provided me with unique skills that have allowed me to achieve things that most would see impossible or not achievable. I design things. I build things. I get things done.

Grant Johnston Work Experience Details
  • Freeface Pty Ltd.
    Founder And Creator
Freeface Pty Ltd. Jul 2017 - Present
    Melbourne, Australia
FreeFace is Snapchat for Recruitment… but we keep the videos. It becomes the first point of contact between a jobseeker and employer by allowing both parties to tell their story versus writing a lengthy resume or job description. It is a generational game-changer that allows both parties to attach video references and video testimonials to their job application or job post, thus giving everyone the opportunity to see, hear and evaluate the position or candidate in sixty seconds or less. Our Vision is not for todays jobseekers and employers but those of tomorrow.“In four years, my twelve-year-old daughter will apply for her first job with no skills, no experience and no references. It will be scary; it will be over whelming and she will be anxious. She will apply online with a lifeless and faceless resume but her personality and character will not be considered. Why?”Our purpose is to make it simple, make it personal and not so scary.
  • Bull Ant Design And Project Management Pty Ltd
    Senior Interior Designer
Bull Ant Design And Project Management Pty Ltd Jul 2014 - Jun 2017
    Melbourne, Australia
If you ask me to slow down, I will reply catch up. If you tell me I am lucky, I will say, luck is a choice, if you ask me about experience, I will say, it can only come with a willingness to learn. We often make mistakes and justify experience as being lucky, experience is not only a choice, it is a way of life. Experience can be gained in many areas but we regularly build walls of distraction into our lives so as to avoid change and the end effect of gaining experience. We then use this as a tool justify why we have be doing the same thing over and over for our entire lives.Over the past two years I emerged myself in the world of app development through self directed learning on multiple online websites that include are not limited to Lynda.com, Udemy.com and iTunesU.com. All of these have provided me with skills and knowledge to become an Appreneur. My greatest experience has been in diversification of the skills I have acquired over the past twenty years of my professional career.
  • Insyde Restaurant Group Pty Ltd
    Managing Director
Insyde Restaurant Group Pty Ltd Feb 2005 - Jan 2012
    Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
If it were not for my years as the Managing Director of the Insyde Restaurant Group (IRG), I would have never understood that being the best in your field of expertise is only five percent of what it takes to create a successful and profitable business. In 2005 I created a startup in the hospitality industry and then managed that business for further seven years. On the eve of the largest floods since 1974 I watched the Brisbane River slowly engulf two of my venues over a twenty-four hour period. Fundamentally, we had not saved for the worst rainy day in forty years.IRG was created with no funding, just an idea that generated a turnover in excess of $14m per year, employed 178 staff and provided food and beverage to two and half thousand people on any given Friday. I was solely responsible for the initial concept of each venue, which was then accompanied by branding and corporate identity, design, documentation, construction, marketing and the grand opening event of each venue. In my role as Managing Director, I was directly responsible for lease negotiations; creation of business plans, submissions for funding and regulatory approval, corporate governance and appropriate documentation associated with board and shareholder meetings.Day to do duties and responsibilities were but not limited to administration, accounts, contract negotiations, cash flow, OHS handbooks, ongoing training and mentorship programs, vilification and anti-discrimination policies, web subscriptions, marketing, public relations and company philanthropy. My experience found that the best motivation for staff was letting go of control, creating ongoing projects with definitive dead lines for completion and making managers and there teams solely responsible for there venue or department. Creating a startup is easy; managing a business requires passion, stamina and direction, I possess all of these traits.
  • Dcm - Design Construction Management
    Senior Designer - Retail Design
Dcm - Design Construction Management Jan 2003 - Dec 2004
    Brisbane, Australia
Upon return to Brisbane, I was casually walking past the offices DCM (Design Construction Management). If it were not for my employment at DCM I would never have had the inspiration to start a business of my own. Whilst I worked with them for twelve months, I was never comfortable in the world of retail design. It is an industry that is very repetitive from shop to shop, retail design only allows for a small amount of creative and flare at the storefront. Unfortunately nearly everything that is designed and built in retail is bound by a large fit out guide provided by the tenant’s landlord or franchise head office. You have to stick with in the predefined parameters of an overseeing architect or brand manager for the whole duration of the design and tenancy fit-out.I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time within DCM’s actual office foyer and was introduced to gentleman call Kenton Campbell. He had just walked in and was looking for a ‘long-term’ design and project management firm for his new coffee franchise, Zarraffas Coffee. It was very clear at that meeting that he had been burnt my many shop-fitters and were now trying to get there brand for the first time into Westfield’s shopping centre, North of Brisbane.I review what they had and politely advised that they had no chance. I advised I needed a week and I will make you a preferred tenant of Westfield’s. One week later I provided a full rebrand of the coffee franchise and within three months they had opened there doors. Zarraffas Coffee now operates over seventy stores across Australia. After the completion six coffee shop franchises throughout South East Queensland, I resigned and started my own business.
  • Zanghellini Holt
    Senior Designer - Hospitality
    Zanghellini Holt Jul 1999 - Jun 2002
    Hong Kong, China
It was by chance but I was offered a job whilst I was giving a lecture at the local ArchiCAD offices on how CAD will change your business and if you are not learning now, you will be a dinosaur tomorrow i.e. extinct. Hernan Zanghellini was attending this lecture and approached me upon completion of my lecture and offered me a position. When I joined, the company it was very much in its infancy with only three projects completed in the Hong Kong. I saw this as a great opportunity to diversify my skills as an interior designer and came on board as the Senior Designer. Over a three-year period, I developed the brand, manuals and procedures for what is now one of the most recognized hospitality design firms in South East Asia. I took this company from having only completed two or three hospitality fit outs to fifteen plus fit outs a year with my final project being the complete refurbishment and design of the heritage listed Peak Café. The Peak Café was a stalwart in Hong Kong’s culture and to this day would be the most challenging and demanding fit out I have ever completed. It was heritage listed and under heavy scrutiny from various local community groups. To this day, my design and vision remain untouched and trading stronger than ever before. As a result of September 11th, SARS outbreak, the hospitality industry literally dried up in 2002. I saw this as a time to move on and as the companies’ most expensive employee; I resigned to allow my salary to support the local Chinese employees. Zanghellini Holt is now a firm that is strongly recognized in hospitality through out South East Asia.
  • Brown James Design And Project Management
    Senior Designer - Commercial
Brown James Design And Project Management Jul 1993 - Jun 1998
    Brisbane, Australia
I was approached through Griffith University to teach a small start up firm how to use their newly purchased CAD software, ArchiCAD 1.0. I said “why not give me a job for six months and then let me loose on an office fit-out to design and build”. I was very upfront that I did not want to be a CAD operator my entire life. My first office fit-out was a 960 square meter refurbishment in the Brisbane CBD for what is now one of the largest legal firms in Australia.Whilst in the role as Senior Designer I was responsible for tender, design, documentation off multiple contemporary office fit-outs through out all major capitals of Australia. It was an industry that was fast paced and very few companies at that point in time had combined the skills of project management, design and computer aided design into there office culture. We were one of the first companies in Australia to submit animated flythroughs on VHS tape in our tender submissions for multi level office fit outs. In today’s current competitive office fit out culture, if it is not animated or rendered on a computer, don’t bother showing up.I terminated my employment with this firm to spend a bit of time travelling South East Asia. My final project was the International Headquarters’ of Billabong surf clothing company at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. Unfortunately I did not see this project completed until I returned to Australia four years later.Michael Brown and Michael James decided in early 2000 to go there separate ways.
