My goal is to get confidential data in the hands of Dutch researchers. As part of the innovation team at SURF, I'm using technology (like algorithm-to-data) to ensure that data owners remain in full control of their confidential data, with the goal that they can share the data with other without risk. We create prototypes and initiate pilots with our members and other partners to ensure that the vision that we have upholds before we bring it to production.

I work about 50% of my time on tooling for the Infrastructure Services Networking Group, and about 50% of my time on R&D within the SURF Open Innovation Lab. The goal of the former is to automate operations by combine DevOps tooling with Infrastructure knowledge. The goal of the later is to create proof of concepts of upcoming technologies in networks and computing, usually in collaboration with national or European partner organisations. In addition I have some formal and informal duties such as member of the change advisory board, technical advisor for datacenter and network management, and lead for some short-term research projects.

Our team maintains the data center network at SURFsara, the Dutch computing centre. We support Dutch scientists who use the SURFsara infrastructure in their high performance networking needs, either directly or in collaboration with other (compute, storage and visualisation) teams within SURFsara. Since we serve demanding scientific projects, we need to continuously innovate our network, and keep track of (international) developments. My task is to lead the network innovation, the network support, as well as the data center operations.

I have been working full-time on network innovation. The results included improvement of network management software, study and proof-of-concepts of new network technologies, and participation in standardisation efforts.

My dissertation, A Framework for Path Finding in Multi-Layer Transport Networks, investigated circuit switched computer networks for scientific applications. My expertise was to model multi-domain, multi-layer networks and optical exchanges. This work was inspired by the practical problems faced by network engineers, including addressing, fault isolation and path finding. It turned out that technical incompatibilities can lead to very complex shortest paths in multi-layer networks, including shortest paths with loops. I proved that link-constrained algorithms can not deal with these complexities, but that path-constrained algorithms can. The result of this work was a multi-layer network model and and a breadth first search algorithm which supported my claims.
