I was senior lecturer in comparative religion, religion and media, and Hinduism and Buddhism at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands. In 1993 I received my PhD on a dissertation about the modernization of Hinduism on the island of Bali, Indonesia. After 1995 I focused my research on Surinamese and Dutch Hinduism, which resulted in a number of publications including various books, such as 'Hindoes in een creoolse wereld'​ (Hindus in a Creole World) and 'Hindus in The Netherlands'.Since 2003 I am also conducting research in the field of religion and film. In 2009 I published the book 'The Challenge of the Silver Screen: An Analysis of the Cinematic Portraits of Jesus, Rama, Buddha, and Muhammad'​.Ik was universitair docent godsdienstwetenschap, religie en media en hindoeïsme en boeddhisme aan het departement Filosofie en Religiewetenschap van de Universiteit Utrecht.In 1993 promoveerde ik op een proefschrift over de modernisering van het hindoeïsme op het eiland Bali. Maar vanaf 1995 richtte ik mijn belangstelling op het hindoeïsme van Suriname en Nederland. Daarover publiceerde ik o.a. 'Hindoes in een creoolse wereld'​ (1999) en 'Hindus in the Netherlands' (2018).Vanaf 2003 houd ik me bezig met religie en film.
