David was responsible for developing an institutional presence in Melbourne for this (then) rapidly growing financial services firm. David was responsible for researching the chemicals, transport, healthcare, and pulp and paper sectors, publishing amongst other regular research, the Chemical Market Monitor and The Paper Book. David was rated number 3 in the chemicals sector, and was a contributor to the small companies research team which was rated #1 (ref. Coles Christie, Reuters). He was responsible for Hartley Poynton’s retail role in the IPO of Cable and Wireless Optus, and the research input for the IPO of Alintagas.

Portfolio Partners Limited was a rapidly growing boutique fund manager, based in Melbourne. Portfolio Partners was rated best Local Institutional Investor in January 1997, and was sold to Aviva in 1998.David reported to David Slack, and was responsible for researching a wide variety of small companies, and chemicals, telecommunication, and heath care stocks. His recommendations to the investment committee were consistently sound. An ancillary but nevertheless important role was the building the firm’s proprietary attribution analysis software (software that measures sources of portfolio performance), in conjunction with IT guru Mark Swoboda.

Swiss Bank Corporation (now known as UBS) is a global investment bank. David researched and valued companies in the transport and chemical sectors and marketed that research to clients of the firm. Highlights of this period were the rigorous training under industry legend Owen Evans and written acknowledgement of his efforts from clients.

The Prices Surveillance Authority was an arm of Government established under the Hawke-Keating Prices and Incomes Accord. With Alan Fels and Chairman, It was merged with the Trade Practices Commission in 1995 to form the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. David reported to Jill Walker and Ross Jones, now both icons of consumer protection.David participated in many studies focusing on efficiency of industries, effects of the learning curve, patents, barriers to entry, development of appropriate price structures, and market analysis and the analysis of individual companies' cost structures and pricing regimes. Industries of interest included tea, coffee, breakfast cereals, health, and agriculture and agricultural chemicals. A particularly detailed project was the Public Inquiry into the Prices of Farm Chemicals, while his analysis of the treatment of interest and leasing costs in company profit and loss statements was at the time, novel.

Travers Morgan Pty Ltd was the Australian arm of Travers Morgan UK, a transport and social research consultancy. David reported to Margaret Starrs and Paul Amos, both acknowledged industry leaders.David’s work included continuing with the analysis of the Road Cost Recovery Study for the South Australian Government, which he had been responsible for updating during university holidays. He also undertook various analyses into Government funding of public transport services and participated in the 3rd runway study for Sydney Airport. A highlight was working late with great colleagues and lots of pizza, a method that he feels still has application.

Mt Isa

As a graduate David produced an analysis of the impact of deregulation on air services to and from Mount Isa, and in association with engineer Cam McDairmid, published “The Graduate’s Introduction to Mt Isa Mines Limited”.
