About Bernard Frischer

Bernard Frischer is the founder and president of Flyover Zone, an employee-owned company based in Bloomington, Indiana with employees and collaborators on three continents. The company's mission is to create expert-led virtual tours across space and back in time to the world's cultural heritage sites and monuments. The company develops its own tours distributed on its proprietary Yorescape™ streaming platform. It also creates virtual tours and digitizes works of art for third parties as a work for hire. Partners and clients include the Art Institute of Chicago, the German Archaeological Institute, the Ministry of Culture of Lebanon, and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.Frischer's interest in virtual heritage grows out of his forty-year career as a professor of the subject at UCLA, the University of Virginia, and Indiana University. He is the author, or co-author, of eight books and dozens of articles on virtual heritage and on the Classical world and its survival. He received his B.A. in Classics summa cum laude from Wesleyan University in 1971 and his Ph.D. in Classics summa cum laude from the University of Heidelberg in 1975. He taught Classics at UCLA from 1976 to 2004. From 2004 to 2013 he was Professor of Art History and Classics at the University of Virginia. Since 2013 he has been a Professor of Informatics at Indiana University, where he also serves as Director of the Virtual World Heritage Laboratory. He has been a guest professor at the University of Pennsylvania (1993), the University of Bologna (1994), and held the post of Professor-in-Charge of the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (2000-01). He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a Fellow of the Michigan Society of Fellows, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and he has won research fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies (1981, 1996) and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (1997). From 1996 to 2003 he directed the excavations of Horace's Villa sponsored by the American Academy in Rome, and from 1996 to 2004 he was founding director of the UCLA Cultural Virtual Reality Laboratory. In 2005 he was given the Pioneer Award of the International Society for Virtual Systems and Multimedia. He is the 2009 recipient of the Tartessos Prize of the Spanish Society of Virtual Archaeology. From 2010-11 he held the Senior Prize Fellowship from the Zukunftskolleg, a center of excellence at the University of Konstanz.Specialties: Application of information technology to cultural heritage; digital archaeology, Virtual Worlds
