About Fritz Feick

Aftershock Digital: A seismic reputation for motion picture, trailer, and commercial post-production"The Story of Aftershock"When the guy jumps off the cliff, there’s no story to be told without the film and video editor, and no one will know whether he lives another day. Without the editor the Super Bowl is just a football game without commercials. Without the editor, Julia Stiles can’t dance. That is my job, to tell the stories, to make them better, and to help companies and non-profits grow.My story: after graduating from Hampshire College, and spending two years in New York as a Media Planner at top advertising agencies, Grey and Ogilvy & Mather, I studied filmmaking at the New School, and began making short films. One of these, a 5-minute music video set to a piece of music by Schubert, was of a young boy who becomes perilously lost in New York City at night. I dedicated almost a year of nights and weekends to capture the surreal and haunting story. That film helped me learn just about every lesson I have ever needed to know in post. When the awards started to roll in it was icing on the cake; film festivals, Prague D’Or, and a place in the collection of the Museum of Television.I headed West. In Los Angeles I started cutting trailers for the networks and the studios. I was encouraged to start my own business. I began to build a company from the ground up that was designed to enhance the client’s creative experience. I invented my own “keys” to creativity using the latest color research, and painted each of the new edit bays different colors. I bought a couple of avid computers with a $20,000 loan and put them on weathered old doors set on top of silver garbage cans. I collected discarded artifacts near the Salton Sea and mounted them on the walls. With all the trappings in place, I only needed a “name.” A week later, the Northridge Quake ripped across the southland and Aftershock Digital was born.

Listed skills include Film, Post Production, Commercials, Video Editing, and 46 others.

Fritz Feick edited first time director Maurice Haeems’ sci-fi drama starring Henry Ian Cusick from “Lost.”A modern-day dystopian thriller reminiscent of The Island of Dr. Moreau: a disturbed scientist freezes his children in a race against time to cure them of their deadly disease. The film also features sharp performances by the veterans Kathleen Quinlan and Erika Ervin “American Horror Story.” The story twists are mind-boggling.

It's “My Big Fat Iranian Wedding!” There is a clash of cultures when a young ditzy Iranian woman (Nazanin Boniadi: Homeland, Ben-Hur) from "Tehrangeles" (the large Iranian community in Los Angeles) falls in love with an ex-Disney heart-throb (Riley Smith) over the hysterical machinations of Maz Jobrani, his crazy drinking buddy (comic Max Amini), with help from her speed-trap cop (comic George Wallace) and love-whisperer (Amy Madigan). Not surprisingly, it turns into a thinking woman’s romcom. The film was mixed in both English and Farsi, which provided an interesting challenge in the editing—especially when having to guess at the translations for the trailer.Review --“Set among L.A.'s well-heeled Iranian-American community, Ramin Niami’s "Shirin in Love" blends tangy romantic comedy and tart social satire into a cinematic cocktail that's pleasingly off-beat, warm-spirited and knowing.” Godfrey Cheshire/Roger Ebert.com

California's Salton Sea, the vast inland lake that was once a paradise of biodiversity, is now an ecological netherworld where nature stuggles to exist. When a beautiful young eco-activist (Katrina Nelson) travels there to investigate a sudden and mysterious disappearance of endangered wildlife, she enlists the help of a science teacher and ex-boyfriend (Kayvon Esmaili). Together, they uncover the terrifying secret of the waters, unlock the passion still in their hearts, and risk everything in a haunting encounter with unpredictable forces. SHOOT article:Fritz Feick, of Aftershock Digital (Los Angeles) recently completed shooting "The Enduring Call," a half-hour thriller set at California's Salton Sea. The film played to a sold-out crowd at its Premiere at the Houston Worldfest which awarded Feick with a Gold Remi Award, his 14th award at Houston in almost as many years. "We lost our hair stylist the first night. When I hiked back to the cars from the beach, she had simply vanished. Apparently, she couldn't get back to civilization fast enough. So much for hair and make-up!" Don't be misled by the looseness of Feick's approach. He copiously planned all of his locations, which required weeks of scouting. He sought to portray a vanishing America, a soulless landscape of complex beauty—one step from desolation. "I chose to shoot in an unique color palette (yellow and green)," Feick adds, "and spent the next two months collecting stacks of green and yellow bottles, toothpaste, breath mints and such. The green camera car was a weekend loaner from a friend, and I put all the clothes on credit cards—which raised a few eyebrows when I returned all of them neatly folded after the shoot."More info: http://enduringcall.blogspot.com/

BEST POSTPRODUCTION FACILITY IN LA New Times/LA"Next time you have a crying need to get some postproduction work done, don't pull your hair out thumbing through the countless listings in the Yellow Pages; go straight to Aftershock. The place may be small in comparison to some of the more expensive facilities, but don't be ooled. Aftershock caters to plenty of big-time clients, FOX for example (AS has done a number of those Alley McBeal spots you love so much). What separates Aftershock from the pack is the staff's human touch; they're all about catering to your specific needs, whether you're a huge network or instead trying to do some tweaking on your next submission to Sundance. The place is done up with a stylishly economical touch: gleaming trash cans support old wooden doors for tables, and folk art on the walls lends a refreshingly non-Hollywood touch to the offices. Ask for Fritz, the enthusiastic, hardworking boss of the place, who has no problem hot-wiring his system to fit your desires. And, best of all, Aftershock is willing to negotiate rates for artists on the rise." And THE SERIES based on the above:Based on the real-life experiences of an intrepid young film editor who one day wakes up and realizes he is cutting for the mafia, AFTERSHOCK is the story of a fledgling post house in Hollywood.

"Wall of Chang" Effie Award-winning spot"7-Up" Gold Award, Houston Worldfest"Virtual Boy" Most effective spot in Leo Burnett historyFilm & Video Magazine (August 1996) by Cristina Brooks Clapp:Los Angeles Experiences A New Kind of Aftershock "Although Los Angeles-based Aftershock Digital may exhibit all the characteristics of a solid, practical editorial house – three avid bays, numerous awards and the client list that includes Coke, Pepsi and Reebok, there is, as the name suggests, something rumbling beneath the surface. When editor and founder Fritz Feick mentions casually that the facility's workstations are propped up on industrial garbage cans, or that he recently suggested using consumed kazoos for sound design, it becomes increasingly clear that Aftershock maintains an unusual perspective on commercial postproduction. This perspective obviously appeals to creative such as directors Kevin Donovan of Los Angeles-based Satellite films, Barnaby Jackson and Rupert Wainwright of Sony's commercial division in Culver City and Cameron Casey of Santa Monica-based Bedford Falls, all of whom have recently brought their projects too, as Feick terms it, "Aftershocks post-modern post-apocalyptic operation." For a recent 7-Up commercial for Ogilvy & Mather/New York, for example, Donovan and Feick collaborated to create an eccentric spot featuring spaceships, monsters, and several rapid chase scenes. In fact the company's show real is bursting with inventive images, edits and juxtapositions. Formed two years ago, Aftershock was has grown from a one-man shop to a thriving editorial house with a staff of six who create their own sound design and take an unapologetically creative approach to post-production. "We're passionate about post," Feick asserts. "We're not driven by profit like some nearsighted donkey chasing a dangling carrot. We have an intense desire to stretch the boundaries of conventional editorial – to leave no stone unturned."
