Profile bio

About Fritz Krembs

I am interested in using engineered systems to remediate environmental contaminants, and also in helping clients find innovative, cost-effective solutions to their environmental management issues.Specialties: The focus of my graduate research, and a significant portion of my subsequent work at Aquifer Solutions and Trihydro, has been in the field of in situ remediation including chemical oxidation (ISCO). My thesis project was funded by ESTCP, and was a subset of the ESTCP ISCO Technology Practices Manual. I have been an invited speaker to professional and industry meetings in the US and abroad. I also have considerable experience with in situ bioremediation, including design analysis and field implementation experience at what may be the largest bioremediation system in the world. At this project, we have worked with the client from the conceptual design / pilot test phases to the operation and maintenance of two bioremediation systems that are continuously optimized based on performance data.I have implemented natural attenuation strategies at many client sites either as standalone remedies or as part of a treatment train. Depending on project needs these have included terminal electron acceptors, genetic testing (qPCR and NGS), stable isotopes (CSIA), and development of site-specific fate & transport models. Most recently, I have been involved in the design and installation of several phytoremediation projects. Most of these were designed to treat 1,4-dioxane as well as other co-contaminants. Additional remediation elements included with the phytoremediation remedy included specialty endophytes, subgrade biogeochemical reactors, and/or solar-powered pumping. I track ongoing developments in emerging contaminants. I am Trihydro's subject matter expert (SME) on 1,4-dioxane and have worked with the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) on development of technical guidance and delivery of online training. I am a lead for Trihydro's PFAS practice area. We have ongoing research projects investigating PFAS transport through the vadose zone and transformation of in land-applied biosolids. We've performed investigations in soil and groundwater. Lastly, I have an interest in technical training. I've developed live and online coursework for Trihydro's internal Technical Leadership Program. I've also had the pleasure of delivering on-site technical training for several of our clients as well as guest lectures on environmental remediation at the Colorado School of Mines.

Listed skills include Groundwater Remediation, Environmental Remediation, Remediation, Hydrogeology, and 23 others.

Senior Engineer / Geologist

I continued with Trihydro after Trihydro's acquisition of Aquifer Solutions. I continue to perform groundwater and soil remediation projects using primarily in situ remediation techniques. My roles include technology selection, design, project costing, field scale implementation, reporting, project management, and business development.

Associate Engineer

Worked at technology-independent, full-service environmental consulting company, specializing in design-build and O&M of in situ remediation systems. Firm specialized in tailoring remediation designs to site-specific conditions, with industry-leading expertise in in situ bioremediation, in situ chemical oxidation, monitored natural attenuation, thermal treatment, and others.

Sep 2008 - May 2011

Research Assistant

Worked on ESTCP-funded In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) Technology Practices Manual. MS Thesis work consisted of design, population, and analysis of a database of ISCO field-scale case studies. Results were published in GWM&R and as chapter in ISCO Monograph published by Springer.

2006 - 2008 ~2 yrs

Engineer I

I worked on both environmental and geotechnical projects in northern New Jersey. Of particular interest was a brownfields site where we were involved in both the site characterization and construction phases.
