I retired in 2023 after 40 years in the business with the majority of those years focused on debilitating autoimmune diseases. I was privileged to launch many life changing therapies throughout my career. As I moved into this autoimmune space (1998 with Remicade), we had a 2 year old daughter newly diagnosed with 2 autoimmune diseases. Obviously, this further fueled my passion for my work. (And my hate of high dose steroids!). She is in remission now as a 28 year old healthy adult but what she (and my wife) went through during those times is hard to describe. Being in the business helped me find the right Rheumatology care for her. The lines between work and my personal life were many times blurred but I cherish the help and friendship I gained with my Rheumatology colleagues. Such bright and kind people. Ironically, 1 year before I retired, I was diagnosed with my own Autoimmune disease (Psoriatic Arthritis). Before being officially diagnosed, I went through my own journey of debilitating pain. I thought for sure I tore both rotator cuffs and my hip pain was from working out. My feet killed me everyday which I chalked up to using the wrong golf shoes! I went to PT, but never truly got better. I struggled getting out of bed each morning. I couldn’t bring my arms up to comb or wash my hair. I even fell a few times.I finally went to a Rheumatology friend. He did Bloodwork, X-rays, etc immediately. “You have Psoriatic Arthritis”. A week later, I was prescribed a Biologic. Literally, within 2 weeks I felt like a new man. I still do 2 years later.Despite knowing what I know from my work experiences, I truly had no idea as to the pain these patients suffer. How did I miss it? Of all people I should know better! I met hundreds of patients like this at many foundation meetings. I have a daughter who went through this pain as well. I am fortunate in that I knew to finally go to my Rheumatology friend. Most patients get passed around in the system until finally getting help years later. They don’t have the Rheumatology contacts I have. I was fortunate. I try to help many relatives and friends who are going through similar journeys in order to expedite getting to a Rheumatologist and proper treatment. There are so many great Biologics out there now for these diseases. Despite that, it takes far too long for most patients to get diagnosed and treated. I try to make a difference where I can.
