The Materials Practice at Brightworks has grown from a team of one to a team of many. With that, Jeff is currently Practice Lead and supports our clients and our internal teams in building their materials knowledge and developing programmatic approaches to materials. Material evaluations, Health and Toxicity, Embodied Carbon and corporate reporting, Circularity have been key areas of expertise. In addition, Jeff spends a lot of time bringing two streams of work together, clients sustainability programs and industry change and standardization. The goal is to move both of these equally to expand the impact that our clients can have beyond just their own programs. We work a lot with a handful of non-profit organizations to bring these activities to life. Our biggest asset and value is our collaborative nature.

Jeff Frost was a Senior Technical Specialist in the Materials Practice at Brightworks Sustainability, a sustainability consulting firm that helps clients in over 25 industries establish and implement sustainability programs. He is recognized as a national subject matter expert on a wide array of material issues affecting the built environment.Jeff was co-founder of the national mindful MATERIALS collaborative; an industry-led initiative to make it easier for building professionals to select products with health and environmental attributes. He was an invited member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Material Knowledge Working Group (MKWG); a group of industry professionals helping shape the AIA’s approach to materials for their members. Jeff is a member of the Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) and was co-chair of the Content Inventory Technical Sub-Group (TSG); tasked with improving the content and structure of the Health Product Declaration (HPD). He was on the USGBC’s MR TAG starting from 2018 to 2021.

During my time at SERA architects, I was an internal resources to teams for LEED and LBC certification work, supported the shift to more sustainable product options and worked to bring sustainability to projects across the varied practice areas. It was during this time that I started getting involved with mindful Materials and developing the Original mindful Materials Collaborative and co-founded the Portland Materials Transparency Collaborative in support of growing awareness regionally for materials disclosures and practices.

Phoenix, Arizona Area

Established the Living Building Challenge Sonoran Collaborative. We hosted training sessions and educational conversation with local designers.

Tempe Campus

Our course guides students in the development of a new facility for the City of Phoenix. In partnership with ASU, the new facility will be the catalyst for a circular economy, utilizing the existing waste stream from the City's existing transfer station. The course is structured around the Living Building Challenge. The goal is to discover design concepts and strategies that will influence the actual RISN facilities development and achieve higher levels of sustainability.

Jeff’s role at SmithGroupJJR is to work collaboratively to measure and improve the sustainability of all projects across our portfolio. This includes reducing a projects energy and water usage and the potential health impacts commonly found in building materials. He developed the Sustainable Performance Workbook to measure, record and evaluate a projects performance across a wide array of sustainable metrics and is actively working to reduce chemicals of concern from specifications. Jeff participates in every project phase, promoting and supporting an integrated design approach and continuously looking for opportunities to push performance further.He also Co-founded the NEXT Committee structure which gathers representatives from a variety of corporate departments into a sustainable advisory panel to oversee and approve sustainable/green measures developed in 5 subcommittees. These subcommittees include, Process, Education, Research, Community and Operations and each is guided by volunteer staff.Mr. Frost received a ‘C3 award’ in 2012 while at SmithGroupJJR for his efforts in Collaboration, Creativity and Community. Mr. Frost has been an invited speaker to a wide range of groups including realtors, architects, developers, business leaders, business students, community colleges, universities, alumni associations, business chambers, and various expos and conferences. Topics have ranged from green building, sustainability, green products, ‘greenwashing’, certifications, indoor air quality, externalities & values, corporate responsibility, LEED MRc4, red list chemicals, living buildings and climate change.

Once a semester I instructed the group of students on green building and green materials and how they relate to indoor air quality. We'd discuss Chemicals of Concern, Red List chemicals from the Living Building Challenge and the impact they have on human health and our ecosystem. We look at tools and resources available to research product ingredients and spend some time discussing externalities and the impact our choices are having on our environment.

Team to develop Sustainable Business Program for the Phoenix Green Chamber of Commerce and the international business community. Program will help businesses to implement sustainable practices, benchmark them against their peers and reward them for their achievements.
