About Fraser Bruce
Fraser is the course director for the undergraduate product design programme at the University of Dundee.I started my career in the early 90’s as an application engineer with a small laser manufacturing company in Dundee where I specialized in the production of high-quality laser parts to client specifications and experimental laser material processing. In 1997, I then took up a position as a mechanical design engineer with pioneering keyhole surgeon Sir Alfred Cuscheri at Ninewells Hospital. I became an integral part of the R&D team devising novel instruments and manipulators, as well as new imaging and optical techniques for Minimal Access Surgery. In 1999, I then went on to work as a product development engineer on the ERDF ‘Dundee by Design’ project. Combining conventional handcrafted techniques and digital fabrication technologies, I led the design and development of a portfolio of new product offerings for the commercial marketplace, serving clients in the art, consumer, medical, telecommunication, automotive and industrial product sectors. I was also instrumental in setting up the New Product Development (NPD) Excellence Programme for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME’s), enabling them to embed design at a more strategic levels inside their organisations. I finally made the transition from industry to academia where I now teach at both undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, delivering specialist lectures, seminars and workshops on the principles and practices of product design, people-centred design methods, prototyping, design thinking and innovation. My research focuses on how people, processes and methods inside organisations can be harnessed to develop new strategies and ideas for addressing socially complex problems. I have led and co-directed projects with Deutsche Telekom, Victoria & Albert Museum, Scottish Outdoor Education Centres, Innovata Biomed Ltd, NHS Scotland, Scottish Government and local authorities and community groups.
Listed skills include Design Thinking, Research, Lecturing, User Centered Design, and 12 others.
