The LSG Foundation is the only 501(c)3 non profit organization in Puerto Rico dedicated to improve the rehabilitation process after a person suffers a Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) so the patient is left with the fewest limitations possible. We visit the hospital and meet the family of a person that suffered a head trauma and after speaking to the doctors attending the case, we prepare the family to the journey they are about to begin. The family and the patient, when discharged are encouraged to attend the foundation’s support group where they will listen to caretakers and patients share their personal experiences. We also share resources, methods of therapy, experiences with medications and others. On many occasions we’ve had Health Professionals, such as Neuro Psychologists and Physical Therapists give presentations to the group on various topics related to rehabilitationTeam Rehab is a program developed by The LSG Foundation. The team consists of a physician, a physical therapist, a speech pathologist, a trauma nurse, a psychologist and a survivor. Team Rehab visits the home of patients that have recently suffered head traumas and are not receiving the necessary therapies, in order to have an effective rehabilitation. After the founder establishes communication with the caretaker, the physician will have a telephone interview with the primary caretaker and develop a patient report. With the patient report on hand, the rest of the team visits the patient’s home. Team Rehab only visits the patient once but our health care professionals can reach individual agreements with the caretakers. The purpose of the visit of to teach the caretakers how to do passive exercises that will improve his mobility, ways to improve his speech and to make sure the patient’s basic necessities are being met. Following our belief that if the caretaker is not fine, the patient will not improve as rapidly, we begin our visit with a 1-hour session between the psychologist and the primary caretaker.
