I collaborated in a team to develop a prototype a gas chromatography – differential mobility spectrometry (GC-DMS) system to detect natural gas odorants. I led the system integration for the project and my role included:• designing the system architecture for the flow and heating systems for both the hardware and electronics• writing the embedded firmware for the system operation and component testing• developing the majority of the Python GUI to control the device• designing and performing test plans to verify component operation• assisting in assembling the system• leading the systems testing to validate the device and the troubleshooting to identify root cause issuesI also managed and mentored six mechanical engineering graduate students during weekly meetings and research discussions to facilitate their research progress.

I worked in interdisciplinary teams to develop multiple portable chemical sensing systems that resulted in eight peer-reviewed publications including four first or co-first authored manuscripts. Some of these projects were:• Building a wearable environmental monitor to collect gaseous chemical compounds for lab analysis. I determined the project definition and specification based on clinician feedback. I designed and built the electronics, hardware, and embedded firmware for the prototype. I also created device drawings and assembly instructions so undergraduate researchers could build additional devices. These devices were used in other research studies.• Prototyping an active air sampler for the collection of plant volatile organic compounds by modifying a commercial hand vacuum. I added a microcontroller and electronics to enable motor control to set the flow rate and volume to be collected for each sample. I performed experiments to calibrate the system and verify its performance.• Improving a mobile spirometer with integrated chemical sensors. I made hardware and user interface enhancements to a lab built mobile spirometer and collaborated with physicians to collect data from volunteers to validate the device.

I was intermittently a teaching assistant for 3 different courses•ENG4: Fundamentals of Graphics Communications | 4 times I led groups of ~20 students in weekly Autodesk Inventor laboratory sessions, and assisted students as they learned to model and produce drawings.•EME108: Measurement Systems | 2 times I supervised groups of ~12 students in weekly circuit-based laboratory sessions where I debugged circuit and Labview code issues the students were having.•EME185A/B: Mechanical Engineering Systems Design Project | 2 times I met weekly with ~six student teams where I guided them through the design process of senior projects and assisted in troubleshooting project problems. I also participated in final design reviews.

I designed accessories for modular robots in SolidWorks and prepared files for 3D printing. I also created and tested robot motion programs to move with the designed accessories
