Profile bio

About Daniel Olivares

I am a well rounded software engineer. Studied Mathematics and Management Science and apply those problem solving skills to designing and developing software. Although I didn't officially study software development, I found the problem solving to be enticing and quickly learned how to read software and a senior architect took me under his wings and I found my passion.I've written scripts in Python, Ruby, Bash and even some complex SQL. However, I did find the JavaScript ecosystem fascinating and decided to make that my "expertise" Ultimately, my love is for solving problems across a software stack. I find that understanding now only how my software runs within its runtime is important, but also the environment in which it runs. In other words, I stepped into the world of DevOps without even knowing it.Now I manage Kubernetes clusters, tinker with Kafka and it's powerful streams API, help others learn about deploying microservices in a CQRS type of architecture and develop core microservices in JavaScript and Golang. In other words, I have pursued my passion for understanding and knowledge. I don't find comfort in finding "my thing" and refusing to solve problems that don't allow me to use tooling I'm comfortable with. I appreciate challenges and I understand that technology, software and hardware move fast and being willing to solve problems that aren't necessarily "in my wheel house" is a great way to learn new skills and stay sharp. My pursuit is to learn, keep up and contribute. I've learned that in this field being humble and accepting of gaps in knowledge leads to greater paths. I've worked for great companies and my opportunities have been fantastic and I'm thankful for that.

Listed skills include Javascript, Databases, Sql, Agile Methodologies, and 46 others.

Led the effort to migrate a monolithic application to a microservices architecture leveraging cutting edge technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.Deployed and managed various Kubernetes clusters using KOPS that served as our QA, Production and Dev environments.Used KOPS’ cluster file definition to create a CI/CD pipeline that served as our “infrastructure as code” deployment process.Wrote a set of Golang microservices that handled TCP connections from our IOT fleet and published them to a Kafka topic. This included a gRPC echo service to duplicate the messages to other environments such as QA and Production.Wrote a Kafka Stream application that used the Streams API stateful features to aggregate sensor readings which resulted in total counts.Wrote a set of Node.js microservices that served as the processing engine for IOT messages which accumulated “complete” messages and distributed them to their uniquely keyed topic.Wrote a proxy service that runs as a side-car with the Swift processor. It proxies Kafka messages as a gRPC stream.Containerized a Swift server application and deployed it as part of our microservices.Planned and built a data stream infrastructure to meet our short-team goal of migrating to microservices with the long-term goal of it becoming the foundation of a platform that will help accomplish the company's vision of becoming the data broker of parking.Deployed and maintain Kafka and Zookeeper clusters on Kubernetes as Stateful Sets that serve as the backbone of our new platform.Deployed the Confluent Schema Registry and documented best practices and guidelines for data modeling using Avro and the concepts of schema compatibility and evolution.Deployed and seeded various Cassandra db Stateful Sets to model and store IOT data.Deployed Prometheus and Grafana to work in unison with Istio to provide quick insights to metrics from microservices deployed to our cluster.
