When I was first starting out in teaching some 30 odd years ago, the most technical training I had was how to create dittos and thread film into a projector ... .not transferable skills to today at all.The two most important “life” skills that my mother wanted me to possess: typing, how to look up anything I wanted to know about (she was a reference librarian). In hindsight my mother was a freaking guru. I can now type on a keyboard without looking and make my computer fly! I can also “Google”, research and now “AI” anything I want to learn or produce…thanks to my mother. As a new college instructor, email was just emerging and shortly after I started the single greatest teaching tool to date was…POWERPOINT! What is my POWER … POINT, you ask? It is that I have spent my career as an early adopter of technology in teaching, in business AND I have taught those that want to learn but don't know where to start. I was an early adopter of computer aided labs, the flipped classroom model and online classes and labs.
