Math Tutor

Virtual

My position with the Princeton Review is strictly virtual. The format of the tutoring sessions is text-based and seldom have audio or video. This impersonal environment was challenging at first because I can typically gauge a student's understanding based on their facial expressions and tone of voice. With this tool stripped from my approach, I have to make a conscience effort to ask the student how they are digesting the material. This emphasizes the true objective of tutoring, which is to guide the student to the knowledge. While this opportunity has refined my ability to communicate over text, I miss the personal aspect of the job. I have a true passion for math and I find great fulfillment from creating connections with people over the subject. I am grateful for being a part of the Princeton Review team, but I have realized how eager I am to begin working in an on-site environment again.

Project Manager

Gainesville, Florida, United States

A mover's job is to safely take items from point A to point B, but this process is often riddled with complexity. As a lead mover, you are solely responsible for how the truck is packed, how the furniture is prepared, and how to contend with any conflict throughout the day. If the truck was packed improperly, which led to additional drop-offs, the customer would be paying for the mistake of the lead mover. Similarly, if a conflict breaks out between crew members and the lead mover does not respond accordingly, the quality of work will suffer. As a luxury moving company, we regularly moved antique furniture, baby grand pianos, billiard tables, grandfather clocks, and other items that require specific care. If luxury items are not disassembled, wrapped, and packed correctly, there will be damage. Taking extra time to deal with these items was important, so I had to coordinate the move with this in mind. Large moves had large hourly fees, so approaching the job in the most efficient manner was a priority to ensure customer satisfaction. If a job was quoted at 10 hours but it only took 8 hours, the customer was eager to share their experience and grow the customer base. Additionally, the savings would often lead to a substantial tip to the movers, boosting moral. If the job were to take 12 hours though, the bill would likely be $700+ higher than expected and they would look towards the lead mover to explain the discrepancy. A proper explanation was the difference between a positive or negative costumer experience. The greatest lesson I learned from being a lead mover with the UF Mover Guys is that people respond well to actions before words. If my crew was slacking, I would get a better response by increasing my own rate of work rather than if I just told them to speed it up. Similarly, if a costumer sees their movers working nonstop, they will be deeply appreciative and seldom find issue with the work.

Math And Physics Tutor

I engaged in three types of tutoring while at the UF Teaching Center: drop-in, private, and lecture style. Drop-in tutoring was largely a team effort with the other tutors in the room. Any subject could come in and ask for help, and with only a few tutors assisting a room full of students, we had to coordinate our responses appropriately. Tutors would typically have two students a semester that they met with for one hour, once a week. These private sessions were more involved so it was important to build healthy relationships. Before exams, review sessions would be held. One tutor was expected to curate a 1-hour long lecture covering the material. These lectures were open to all the students in the course and often had over 300 in attendance.Tutoring at UF taught me how to effectively communicate instructional information to individuals, small groups, and large groups.

Camp Counselor

Fort Myers, Florida, United States

My general responsibilities were to keep the children entertained in an orderly fashion. Our camp had ages from 4 to 12 so it was important to provide a variety of activities to accommodate all of the campers. Working with children is very much controlling chaos. The balance of allowing them to unapologetically have fun while still adhering the to words of their councilor came down to trust. If the kids trusted their councilor, they listened. While I don't expect to work with children again, the experience taught me about leadership. Even with little kids, respect and trust do not exist without a balanced relationship.

Customer Service Representative

North Fort Myers, Florida, United States

Working behind the customer service desk was my first introduction on how to diffuse conflict in a professional setting. Any patron with a problematic experience came to us to sort it out. Genuine honesty was the best approach that I found for dealing with upset customers. If a mistake was made by a Home Depot associate at the expense of the customer, it was important to provide a complete explanation rather than just fixing the problem and moving on. Working as a customer service representative taught me that being forthright about a mistake is typically received better than just covering it up with a solution. In retail, you are selling trust and owning up to a mistake, made by yourself or the company, is a great way to build that trust.

May 2017 - Aug 2017

Sales Associate

Fort Myers, Florida, United States

My responsibilities included assembling furniture, loading the sales floor, and assisting customers. Management put an emphasis on customer service, telling us that if a customer wanted to hold a conversation with us, that should become our immediate priority. While HomeGoods is a massive franchise, it was important that customers liked the people that they were directly purchasing from. My time at HomeGoods taught me the power of conversation. It amazed me how quickly you could feel connected to strangers over a short, engaged conversation. Creating that engagement simply came down to where you focused your attention. If I was packing shelves, and a customer approached me, fully stopping what I was doing, turning directly towards them and providing a genuine answer often led to an extended conversation. Creating these connections taught me about the importance of likeability in retail. Simply put, people prefer to do business with someone they enjoy talking to.
