Through my study, I am looking for the possible link between 2D:4D ratios and athletic ability in Division II soccer players through PCR and electrophoresis lab methods. By compiling surveys and two written consent forms from all participants to be used in comparison with averaged measurements from both scans and physical measurements of the second digit and fourth digit of both hands of the participants, I can find the first parts of the project. I am isolating DNA through the combination of Instagene beads, vortexing, and using a centrifuge for the procedure, to be able to analyze the DNA. Through this procedure, I can analyze the CAG repeats on the androgen receptor gene on the X chromosome using PCR techniques to find the link of less CAG repeats and an increased sensitivity of the androgen receptor protein to bind with testosterone. I will be continuing this study and research in the upcoming academic year.

However, the majority of genetic tests are not indicated for most individuals and there is a great need for caution in the use and interpretation of genetic testing. The mission of Genetic Counseling Services is to help assess the eligibility of clients and their families for genetic testing, and provide clear explanation as to the benefits and limits of genetic testing. With the power of molecular genetic testing, we now have the opportunity to take advantage of significant risk reducing options and provide anticipatory guidance for diseases that have affected previous generations of families.
